How come Blade Runner 2049 got it so right and new Star Wars has not?

something in the water?

I'd say Blade Runner 2049 was a noble failure whereas Nu Star Wars is an inglorious disaster. The difference is probably something to do with treating the original with respect rather than contempt.

But they both wasted Harrison Ford.

it only failed at the box office, critical success otherwise anyone that saw it thought it was great. except for some millenials that pirated the movie without even seeing the original and started trolling online about how long it was.

Well I saw it and was disappointed and I'm no millennial. But then it would have been very tricky to pull off a sequel to a lighting in a bottle film like Blade Runner (especially now Harrison Ford is so much older) and I respect what they tried to do. This is just my opinion and have no problem with anyone that thinks otherwise - can't say the same for the Star Wars sequels though, to enjoy those requires cognitive dissonance on a dangerous level.

I'll second that- I'm a Baby Boomer, I own 3 versions of the original, and I thought 2049 was dogshit. Just a horrible, horrible movie.

Star Wars? Well, Disney owns it now, so there has to be all the SJW stuff in it. There will be homosexuals, women, other colors, and they're all the good guys at the top level of command, and the whiteys will be the bad guys. If there IS a white male on the good guys, you know he will be subordinate to all the others, because well, because Disney says it's thus.

Let's be honest: Kylo Ren is about the weakest bad guy out there- he never wins, he's a whiny brat, he screams commands- not orders them, fundamentally, everything wrong with the 'king Millennials today, who THINK they're in charge, but one real tough guy will come along, beat them up, or bully them, and steal their lunch money, and they're back in aromatherapy with a coloring book.

Haven't seen 2049 but maybe the writers for that were actually thinking about story and not how they could shoehorn in as much pc'ness and humour as possible?

reply

There was humor?

Blade Runner 2049 didn’t have fuckwit feminazis in charge, Blade Runner 2049 crafted an original story whereas Disney Star Wars gave us a half-baked reboot with a left wing political message…yay

2049 featured a lead investigator who talked slower than molasses. Somehow, I doubt someone in that kind of situation would talk slow to other people, especially when the situation was as critical as it was and you're in that kind of profession.

Star Wars was driven by political agendas and commercialism. BR2049 was story-orientated.

Blade Runner world did not change in 30 years, just a poor copy of the past

Blade Runner 2049 was made by people who give a shit about something other than money

Im a huge Blade Runner fan. Habe that movie on lamost any known media :). But BR 2049 is just a lame trial to make even more money. Which is indeed completely impossible, cause BR was so mucvh a product of the 1980s as, for example, Tron. We all thought about some amazing future (if we werent nuked before :) ). And even darkness back then was cool.

But BR 2049 is mainly ..... depressing. Its the problem with humans :) . They are getting older and, sometimes, wiser. Thats why Spielberg cant do any Indiana Jones movies anymore. And thats why Scott cant do BR anymore. The cool neon lighted darkness is missing :) .

Making a good movie takes a lot of talent on a lot of levels. It's not something a committee of accountants can pull off.
