To make way for countless other trilogies , this is going the same way as the marvel universe, in 10 to 15 years time we will be on our 20th Disney star wars movie , we will have crossover movies and the last Jedi will be the movie that planted the seed. Star wars as we knew it is dead.
shareIt has always been called a Space Opera (i.e. a soap opera in space; i.e. a never ending series of melodramatic episodes) and Lucas' original plan was to just keep churning a new one out every few years.
Will they keep making more movies after 9? Possibly. If enough people are going to pay, why not? They might be bad. They might be worse. Or, they might get someone good to craft an overarching interconnected story worthy of three movies and capable of making something brilliant. Either way, it doesn't cost me anything unless I choose to spend my time and money on it.
But anyone still holding on to some kind of ideal of purity with a "Star Wars as we knew it" after those inane prequels is either deluded or has a very selective memory.
that wasn't Lucas's intention at all , it had the potential to have 12 episodes but it was always the story of the skywalkers and ends with the Skywalkers , see Mark Hamills interviews during Jedi promotion in 83
shareI found it funny how Kylo specifically states "You had no place in this story". Took it as a nod to what you speak of. He also added "You come from nothing". Someone else in the story came from "nothing".

His intention was to tell a story, not to churn out movies year in year out, cartoons maybe , but not from the original trilogy.

They have nowhere to go after episode IX. Han, Luke, and Leia are gone. They were the big draw for this new trilogy. Nobody really likes the new characters Rey, Poe, and Finn. and Daisy Ridley doesn't want to do anymore anyhow.
They need new main characters going forward and they don't have any.
yep, this is not going to go the way they think, after IX, I predict harsh times for Disney's star wars , Episode 1 of the new trilogy wont get any where near 1 billion
