Rey is a Mary Sue.

"Spotlight stealing": Rey is instantly loved, admired and desired by everybody including enemies (BB-8, Finn, Han, Chewie, Kylo Ren, Snoke etc), even when this compromises story logic and character backgrounds. Examples:
-Leia hugs the complete stranger Rey after the death of Han (and supposed death of her son at Rey’s hand) while old friends Chewie and Leia completely ignore each other (JJ already admitted the mistake). This is classic Sue writing: only the Sue’s POV counts, the fact that Leia and Chewie are old friends and the emotional link to Han and always hugged before (carbonite scene etc) is irrelevant;
- Rey takes-over the captain and piloting position on the MF after Han dies (she sits in the pilot seat) – Chewie the 600y Wookie remains the copilot on his own ship of a 19y old woman they just met a few hours before (Sues start at the top);
- Rey the scavenger is sent on the most important Resistance mission to find Luke - but not his sister Leia (who “desperately” was looking for him) or other resistance fighters who know Luke! Rey walks up the island, Luke’s old friends Chewie and R2-D2 mysteriously stay back waiting with the ship (Sue is center). The mission was to bring Luke back, not to send him somebody who he can train there on the island.
-debatable: Kylo removes helmet before Rey, though from the narrative POV it would have made sense that he only shows his face to Han (Sue is center);
- even light sabers and dead OLD MASTERS (Yoda, Obi Wan) call out to Rey, this never happened before with any other Jedi (even “Space Jesus” Anakin) - demonstrating how special Rey is.

"Better than You"/ "Copycat" Sue: Rey regularly bests other character at their game, or rescues them and/or drains competence from them, thus compromising story and character backgrounds. Examples:
- The lifelong soldier Finn looks incompetent and foolish next to Rey (fighting, piloting, languages, Starkiller security and mechanical stuff), is beaten by her, and must be rescued by her many times.
-The main antagonist Kylo Ren, the 30 year old Master of the Ren (and Jedi killer), who is established as very powerful, is beaten, maimed and emasculated (broken saber) by Rey physically and on mind-level several times – all that despite of Rey having no proper Force or sword fighting training. He finally has to be rescued by a deus ex machina plot device (opening chasm) to be save from her.
- Rey constantly advises and bests Han (and Finn) with mechanical and engineering ingenuity regarding Han’s own ship, driving him to angrily leaving the cockpit ("Away Ball") and resulting in him offering her a job quickly.
- Rey also replaces C-3PO as a translator, BB-8 seems completely useless because Rey does all the mechanics and engineering to repair and improve the falcon.

reply

“God Mode Sue” Rey has ad hoc abilities and powers, whenever the story needs her to look good, despite her story background of being a lowly, starving scavenger struggling to survive. Characters speak of her as if she was the second coming (Kylo: “She gets more powerful every moment”). Examples:
-Rey has sudden force abilities on Master-level (mind trick, telekinesis, mind reading) that took Luke and other Jedi several movies to learn.
-She has amazing stunt piloting abilities with a bulky, unwieldy freighter (MF) and without a co-pilot (!) speeding and spinning thorough a graveyard and through a destroyer under heavy fire - without her having ever flown the MF before!,
-Rey has incredible aiming abilities, despite not having shot a blaster. She only misses one single shot, then blasts away all soldiers with one hit at a great distance.
-She can hit with the Falcon turret even when she is not sitting on the turret gun, but piloting the freighter (“How did you do that ? I don’t know!”),
- she speaks all languages of the aliens she accidently meets, including "binary droidspeak" (it was establishes in the OT that humans can’t do that - Luke never could except with cockpit translator); she even speaks Wookie though Wookies are not space travelers/are not seen on Jakku.
- She is an ace engineer ("I bypassed the compressor") and rocket science mechanic;
- Rey even knows how to disable the security system on the Starkiller base (“The girl knows her stuff”).
- Rey despite her frail, half-starved condition is a master climber with great spelunking abilities.
- Despite being set up as a starving lowly scavenger woman, Rey has unblemished looks (typical Sue trait): she is the only young, beautiful woman around; she wears make up and lipstick and sports impressively white teeth and a posh theater accent despite of her background in poverty .
- Rey has a mysterious background, indicating she is very special.

great thread. you really owned those feminist hags like frogrema who claim that rey isnt a marry sue

reply

Obvious sock. You try too hard to make it look different with all the generic ploys: Don't capitalize, use deliberately poor grammar, misspell obvious words. Plus you only use this one as backup.

Seriously, people have been making socks for years and doing these EXACT SAME TACTICS. The lack of capital letters is actually hugely obvious, it's VERY specific to socks.

what is a sock? english isnt my first language thats why i have spelling mistakes. but regardless my point is solid. unlike yours. your just a feminist mangina troll who love bashing man online and promote man hating

reply

She means a "sock account" which is basically like having two username/persona's on line and commenting on your own post with that other "sock account" A cover of sorts.

reply

There were a lot of things I hated about it but it didn’t ruin the experience, I’m net positive.

And your point would be...?

I’m not saying that all Trump voters think Rey is a Mary Sue, but if you think Rey is a Mary Sue, you probably voted for Trump.

reply

This may be the dumbest post on all these boards. Well done.

reply

Would you like to explain why it is dumb?

reply

See exhibit A, footlegger, below. You have joined filmtenk in your idiotic suppositions and predictions. Thanks for playing.

reply

As always the MaREy Sue deniers have no rebuttal.

reply

I think she is Mary Sue and Trump is a bloated idiot.

reply

Mary Sue is a term describing a plot trope, not a term used by bigots to hate on women. I think your own biases are coming out.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue

I'm a super leftist progressive that voted for Jill Stein, and Trump is trash. TLJ is still a flaming dumpster fire of a movie.

reply

Fair enough. I’m seeing countless posts from people critiquing TLJ as Kathleen Kennedy’s feminist attack on all men and an attempt to impress a social justice warrior agenda on the world, like it’s a bad thing. Feminism is about equality for all and social justice is worth fighting for. In the age of Trump these have become bad things to many scared and insecure folks. It’s a real bummer that we are seemingly rolling back progress.

I read this as far right insecurity.

reply

Yeah, the alt right folks are definitely gonna hate this movie, but that is just sowing confusion, because the movie sucks on its own merit.

reply

Rey is The Last Mary Sue. She’s set a new standard for effortless perfection. Henceforth, characters in this mold will called a “Rey”.

Yes, she's a white British young female.

It's why you always see British guys marrying foreign Thai etc. ladies who already have kids.

Wow! You can copy-and-paste! I hope you learn how to "delete" your stuff too.

reply

Why didn't you credit the author of that post (Jedan_Archer)?

reply

Interesting. I notice a lot that highly negative, antagonistic people (like those who love to bash females) often have a hard time forming and expressing a cohesive opinion, so they repost other peoples' thoughts. Another example is when it comes to movies they hate, they love to post links to negative reviews/videos that "validate" them.

reply

''bashing females'' = pointing out the flaws of this film. so anyone who say rey is a marry sue (because she is) is a woman hater?

you understand now why you feminists have a bad name? and the funny thing is. most females agree with us. how is it being a white knight mangina who love hate himeself and worship feminists?

reply

Where is Jedan anyways? He needs to come to this site and get things straightened out with all this mary sue talk.

reply

Gotta give credit for trying to back this up (though it's reposted?)

It's too bad you didn't number them. I'm going to respond with the same number of hyphens, one for each of yours.

Obviously, Rey is the main character, so there is a lot of focus on her just like there was a lot of focus on Luke in the OT. Thus, I bet every point will apply to Luke as well, but he was never bashed endlessly for being a spotlight thief or a Gary Stu, and never will, because he's a guy so there's no AGENDA against him. Some of your points may not even be valid, though, so if they are not, I will point that out.

We begin:

-Leia comforts Luke over Ben's death in ANH even though HER ENTIRE HOME PLANET JUST GOT DESTROYED, and even though Luke had only known Ben for about a day or two. SPOTLIGHT THEFT IN THE MOST BLATANT WAY IMAGINABLE! Your point about Han in TFA is silly because you're assuming that Leia is hugging Rey in mourning. Considering Rey is about to leave, I think she's just hugging her goodbye! Thus, this point isn't exactly even valid. Why do you assume the hug is about Han? Because AGENDA, maybe?

(It's kind of funny about your point, though, Chewie gets shafted a lot. He didn't get a medal at the end of ANH even though Han did, and Leia called him a "walking carpet" for no reason in ESB, something that would make you label a female character a feminazi if it happened now. Then Chewie gets everyone caught in the Ewok net in ROTJ.)

-In ANH, Han has Luke get in the other Falcon gun with no questions asked, because Luke is just good at anything needed. Later, Luke is given a spot in RED SQUADRON and sent to battle the Death Star even though no one there has ever seen him fly anything at all, and he certainly hasn't flown an X-Wing. Oh but he's gonna be better than all those experienced Rebel pilots, just because! They aren't even bothered when Luke puts away his targeting computer, they just don't care because Luke is magic.

-Is Chewie really co-pilot to Rey? You sure he's not the pilot? I have a vague memory of Chewie doing the real flying at the end of TFA when they leave to find Luke, and seem to recall Rey looking like she's distracted. However, this point is invalid because there is nothing specific to prove your point with. No one specifies that Chewie is her co-pilot. The seats don't matter because you can pilot from either side, and Chewie would probably not want to sit in Han's old seat anyway.

-Leia has very important things to do, like actually leading the Resistance! She is planning to see Luke soon enough anyway. There's no reason for her to go along, and every reason to stay in her leadership role.

-The light saber "calling" is new, so obviously it hadn't happened before, and it's calling out to the only Force user nearby. There are no others available, so this point is doubly irrelevant. As for dead masters, Obi-Wan called out to Luke after he died. Hell, Obi-Wan GAVE HIS OWN LIFE just so Luke wouldn't SLOW DOWN. It wasn't even a huge noble sacrifice to save the lives of others, it was just done to get Luke to LEAVE. Even with such a weak justification, it's accepted and unquestioned BECAUSE it was done "for" Luke, because everyone should lay down their lives for Luke.

Now for the "better than you" section:

-Finn was not a lifelong soldier, he wimped out on his first mission. He was in sanitation before that. I have a feeling this one is a very deliberate lie, but I can't imagine you being dumb enough to think no one would notice, so it MUST be a mistake.

-This is also very dishonest, as you once again dismiss that Kylo was very badly wounded before his fight with Rey, and he wanted to train her, not kill her. Despite his wounds, he still had the upper hand for most of the fight, and only lost to Rey after she channeled the Force. ALSO, let's not forget Luke, who NEVER GOT LIGHTSABER TRAINING, and yet was somehow able to become better than Vader, who had been fighting with sabers LONGER THAN LUKE HAD BEEN ALIVE.

-Rey has had access to the Falcon for years on Jakku, it was owned by the same creature who looked after her and who she worked for. Besides that, she didn't "best" Han, she impressed him.

-BB-8 in general isn't the same kind of droid as R2, and thus may not be as flexible. He's much smaller and thus would not have as many tools. Also, Rey grew up on Jakku, mostly working independently, so she had to learn languages. This is a really weak point because you're literally criticizing her for knowing things she would need to know. Some people are multilingual, and some aren't. If you go around calling multilingual people "spotlight stealers" then you'll look like a crazy person. Some people are also engineers, and some aren't. Rey would have to know a lot about engineering in order to be a good scavenger, to know what parts are valuable, and what they do. Obviously you can't give her credit for any of her character traits or her history because, again, AGENDA.

(PART 2 BELOW)

reply

(PART 2)

I'll add: Once again you overlook all the errors and screw-ups from Rey, in fact I never see the Mary Sue crowd even acknowledge their existence. If I bring them up, you guys run. You know, like how she screwed up and destroyed Han's freighter, as well as almost getting Finn killed. She had a mindless attachment to Jakku that was an obvious weakness even to Finn who had just met her. She ran away from everyone at Maz's castle, got caught by Kylo, and

Luke in ANH even got to save the Rebellion, he got to irresponsibly put ALL their lives on the line by shutting off his targeting computer JUST so he could try out the Force that he had only recently heard about, and had basically no experience with.

Rey didn't even help destroy Starkiller base. All she did was distract Han and Finn from their mission due to Rey getting captured earlier.

Oh but Rey must be bashed ENDLESSLY and Luke gets to be the magical hero that everyone adores. He gets to be promoted to Ace Fighter Pilot over other experienced Rebels even though he'd never flown an X-Wing. An old Jedi Master lays down his life JUST so Luke won't slow down. Leia cares so much about poor Luke missing a man he knew for a day that she doesn't even care to mourn her entire dead family and the genocide of the planet she called home. It doesn't matter because everyone just KNOWS that Luke is the all-important one!

LOL, Rey is your basic Star Wars central character, but there is obviously something DIFFERENT about her you hate. I wonder what that could be. HMMMMMMM
