This is why SW sucks and will continue to suck: the story group

Read this to understand, why it sucks. And why every movie since Disney took over has had "strong" female characters only in main roles.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/22/movies/star-wars-last-jedi-women-run-universe.html

I'm just going to pick out a few cherries from the article:

Kathleen Kennedy founded the group in 2012 when she succeeded George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm, putting Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer, in charge of the unit. Ms. Hart’s first move was to make the story group entirely female, starting with Rayne Roberts and Carrie Beck. Both women had experience in film development but had also worked in other arenas — Ms. Roberts in magazine publishing, and Ms. Beck with the Sundance Institute.

*A recipe for disaster. Here we have three feminazis in charge of the main SW storyline and the universe in general.

Today, the Lucasfilm story group is a diverse outlier in Hollywood: five of its members are people of color, and the team includes four women and seven men.

*Do not judge their competence, look at how diverse they are! Look at it! So diverse!

A new, unpublished analysis of “Star Wars” films shows striking progress in their representation of gender and race.

*Is this about SW or about race and gender - basically politics? Some fat feminazi is given power to live her girl power dreams through SW along the way ruining the story for the rest of us. Yay!

So the fucks in charge basically make SW for themselves, not for the general public.

I'm sure plenty of racists also hated that the story of Empire Strikes Back was destroyed with an intentionally token black actor being cast in a major role:

http://stuffblackpeopledontlike.blogspot.com/2015/12/hansolodies-remember-when-george-lucas.html

Still smarting from criticism that Star Wars was racist, George conceived of Lando as “a suave, dashing black man in his thirties” and specified in his script that half of the Cloud City residents and troops were to be black (in the actual film, only a few blacks are visible).

Because, you know, the gender and race of fantasy characters -- in stories unrelated to gender or race issues, no less -- has SUCH a huge impact on the story.

For example, if Rey was Ray, that character would have to be vastly different. I may be having trouble thinking of a way to explain why it would be vastly different, but give me a few days. Is that alright?

"Because, you know, the gender and race of fantasy characters -- in stories unrelated to gender or race issues, no less -- has SUCH a huge impact on the story."

Luke, I am your FATHER.
PRINCESS Leia
QUEEN Padme
Shmi Skywalker MOTHER of Anakin
Ben Solo son of FATHER Han Solo and MOTHER Leia.
Strong Force abilities passed down through generations? How? Sexual intercourse between males and females = gender issues.

So, gender makes no difference?

"I may be having trouble thinking of a way to explain why it would be vastly different" You ever take an anatomy class? If not, then that's the reason why you have so much trouble telling the difference between males and females.

So, gender makes no difference?

The labels were applied after the characters were already defined. If Leia had been male, we'd have a Prince. A female Vader would be Luke's mother.

You have typed probably the dumbest argument you've thought up yet, congratulations.

reply

"were already defined" meaning they were given genders. Case closed.

You're the biggest troll on here. If you would only use your brain for something insightful, instead of insulting, people might actually respect you on here. But, until then, you are, by far, the biggest troll on these boards.

If racists hate Lando just because he is a token black guy (although how his being black affects the actual role itself I don't know), then I wonder how they felt about Vader.

Funny how that Times article didn't mention that -- that the baddest ass in the entire series had his lines spoken by a black dude from day one. But I guess that doesn't count.

reply

Lucas originally wanted Orson Welles to do the voice, but the races of non-visible actors are pretty much irrelevant, just like the fact that David Prowse was in the Vader suit and he was white.

reply

"Feminazis." Seriously? You're using Rush Limbaugh words from the late 80s? You're an idiot.

reply

Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer – that’s laughable, check out her history on IMDb. LOL

reply

Even that would be forgivable, if she was a promising sci-fi writer or a prominent sci-fi enthusiast. But I don't think that's the case. I'd really like to see, what godly qualities other members of this mighty story group possess! From the moment I heard about this so called story group, I was highly suspicious of them. Somehow I didn't believe the group consisted of passionate SW and sci-fi geeks, that are sitting and theorizing about SW universe in scholarly fashion.

reply

Not much there.

reply

That explains a lot.

Maybe this is one of the reasons why the Hanz solo movie has had such a difficult birth...

It'll still open huge as StarFans are loyal beyond reason... 😂

I dont think women or black actors are the problem with this movie. Main problem is just.. whole movie does not make any sense. A 4 year old can write better script.

Just gonna give 3 examples:

Most of the movie is (supposed to be) Luke training rey. First order chasing rebels. Finn and that annoying girl trying to get a hacker on a casino planet or something.

But in the movie:

Luke does not train rey. She can just do everything without training because..?

First order is chasing rebel ships, but why? In the movie they say their lasers cannot reach them. But they have 0 ships that are faster then any rebel ships? They have no tie fighters?(well they do send 2 tie fighters and kylo, guess they have 3 tie fighters) T
hey cannot just blink 2 or 3 ships in front of them? Only one first order ship is tracking the rebel fleet, so.. the other first order ships have to fly next to this slow ship? Nowhere in the universe are more first order ships that can blink in front of the rebel fleet? wtf

Whole side story with finn and annoying girl. Hmm yea, it does nothing for the story. 0 purpose, benicio del toro betrays them and the first order pays him and lets him walk away (because why not, they are good guys who would never just shoot him instead of paying him)

tbh fck this movie

They even got women to write and direct them!

Oh, wait...
