fathers imposing SW on to their kids

it always surprises me that kids today are so into SW. The whole saga not just the current films (as kids aren't normally into stuff their dads were into, stuff that's been made before they were born)

Or are they?..

I think they actually aren't that bothered about or even like SW and are just saying they are and agreed to go see TFA again and again and pretending to go crazy over Han Solo and chewie and the Falcon and accepting all the toys etc their dads buy just to keep their dads happy, telling them what their dads want to hear because they know it means so much to them and know its their dads who wanted to see TFA 5 times and want all the toys lol (and then having to comfort their crying fathers after the Han/Kylo confrontation lol) and had to do it all over again with Rogue One and then again now with TLJ etc until they finally get old enough to go 'no more father..no more'

its abit like kids who grew up with SW back in the 70s/80s their dads wanting them to be into stuff that they were in the 1960s/1950s and even earlier (oh dad don't go on about the war again!)

I seen it with this guy I know his boy is only 5 or 6 and has been indoctrinated with SW from almost birth with all the toys, lightsabers etc for Xmas/Bdays etc, dressing him up as Luke (photos of his bemused face on the parents FB pages), made to sit and watch the 6 films on dvd (his facial reactions being monitored closely by his dad. And oh the dilemma of how to show his boy the films 1-6 or OT/PT when his boy probably couldn't give a crap and wasn't following the story whichever way hes forced to watch them), TFA tickets booked months in advance seeing it opening day (with his dad) same with R1, and hes probably already done it already with TLJ. he never really had a chance to find it for himself or decide if he likes it or not as his dad is so into it its like its not an option for him. he WILL love SW and that's it! I bet if I got him on his own and asked him to be totally honest and tell me what he really thought hed say he didn't even like SW and was more into Marvel, Transformers, and Ninja Turtles lol

Marvel sucks. It's shallow entertainment. That's why it is so successful.

Mom's do it, too :-)

My whole family - guys and gals - are really into Star Wars. Some of my mom friends, too.

I was at a dinner party recently (yes, I'm in my 30s...) and two of the couples were discussing this very thing...
Both couples have boys who are around 3 years old... Both fathers and one of the mothers are Star Wars fans, their dilema was in what order to introduce the series to their kids, order of film release or chronologically?

They were so excited at passing on their enthusiasm for Star Wars to the next generation... That's when I realised why Disney are going to make a killing... they will turn this into a multigenerational fairytale to be shared by the family...

I don't have children... But I'm not really fanatical towards any movie series, show or sports team... So I don't know how I feel about it... I recognise that wanting your kids to like it does come from a place of love...

Children will always be influenced by their parents. Its how it works. Those parents you are talking about might introduce star wars, but in the end it will be the kids choice if they like it or not. Some kids like stuff because they like, others like stuff because their parents do and others hate stuff because their parents like it. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to kids, or people for that matter. Its like saying a kid will turn out to be gay because he or she has gay parents, which completely ignores the part where gay kids come from homes with straight parents.

What bozo says is true. Some parents obsessively push their own likes and dislikes on their kids. Its not just starwars though, its everything. Football teams, car brands, music, etc etc. Look at all the demented women pushing their kids into beauty contests like that honey booboo kid. And now we have the internet to content with constantly pushing agendas this way and that. 24/7 propaganda machine that tells the news in a way to fit the providers own narrative. You like aftershave? Well you should like brand X because movie star Y wears it. In all honesty can anyone say in this day and age that any of us are allowed to find things for ourselves anymore? Or be introduced to something that doesnt follow a self serving reason?

And along the way Disney will brainwash new generations of fans via subliminal liberal messages.

reply

If my child doesn’t like Star Wars I’ll disown him or her.

That's the spirit!

Wonder if the guy I know has taken his kid to TLJ. I guess yes and is probably talking to him about it non stop. The kid probably relived to get back to School to get away from him lol

reply

The kid probably thinks about anime and hentai.

reply

I know PLENTY of moms who force their kids to worship at the alter of Star Wars too. It's no dad-exclusive club. It's creepy and weird but that's what humans do.

reply

Parents also impose religions on their kids, and this is nothing compared to that literal brainwashing.

reply

That's pretty intense. We can blame the aggressive marketing strategy of the SW commercial arm to some extent for this sort of delusional bahaviour. I agree, the only joy someone can have in something is if they feel interested and emotionally engaged in it. You can't command or force enjoyment in someone. Instead, why not be happy with your own enthusiasm and the fact you can share this with those who can appreciate it like you do.

reply

Wonder how many times the dad has inflicted TLJ on his boy now.. probably 5 times.

"please dad..no more..no more..uh huh huh huh"

"NO! WE GO AGAIN!!!'

'nooo'

since my OP i guess hes 'force'd his son to endure Solo (i picture just the 2 of them alone in the cinema) and TROS many many times... by now perhaps the son has killed his father in his sleep .. or at least dreamed of it
