Episode VIII - time to give us something new
George Lucas was dedicated to having every film give us something new. We did get some new things in Episode VII (which I heartily enjoyed), but they were clothed and designed with nostalgia for the OT; in fact, the film is nearly a sneaky remake of Episode IV. But I understood why. Despite the huge success of the PT, fandom and media were bitterly divided over the style of the movies, perceiving Lucas was overly reliant on green screen and wholly digital sets, giving it a feeling of sterility (likewise with many of the performances.) So it was about bringing back the warm rush of excitement we felt with the OT. Mission accomplished. But what with Rogue One, Star Wars: Rebels and the upcoming Han Solo spinoff deeply exploring the timeline everyone loves best - Empire vs. The Rebel Alliance - it's time to give us new things with Episode VIII. We are over 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi; time to put up or shut up.
