What a bunch of prudes on IMDB

There is no reason for this movie to be rated so low. This is in no way a bad movie. It's definitely cringe-worthy. It seems to me that people are just turned off by it being "disgusting" when in reality it's an upbeat honest portrayal of a *beep* up teenage girl. Am I wrong here?

reply

It is disgusting. Portraying her as a victim of a very unfortunate childhood, struggling with absurd perversions to get attention and NEVER making one bit of advancement to become better is a pointless plot. Why in the world would anyone want to watch grotesque scenes like this only to have it end with no redemption? My question is... what is the point of any movie like this? Shock value, maybe. But, that doesn't qualify any movie to earn good ratings. The acting may be good, but the motive for making this type of movie is questionable. It does nothing but pollute the mind with images that some people might never have had. I don't think there's anything endearing about seeing someone rubbing their privates all over nasty surfaces then exposing themselves to other people. So, yes we are definitely turned off.

No movie needs a "Happy End" or "Redemption" or a "Message".
The book on which this movie is based, was a bestseller, so why would anyone read it if there is nothing to it?

There is a point in doing this and other similar movies (where similar doesn't necessarily mean about the same subject). Art expands perception and consciousness. Without it, we wouldn't move, our minds wouldn't open, we would not advance, become more intelligent. You, yourself, think the way you do because others, before you, pushed the thinking machine forward and, believe me, there were LOTS of people against it, disgusted and turned off by it. Things you now consider completely normal, like your values were, in fact, not natural at all and somebody had to shock society proposing them.

Nobody's saying that nasty things are not such. We must put things into context to understand them fully. It's the relation we have towards nastiness, and not nastiness itself, that is discussed in the movie.

The way you phrase "rubbing their privates" shines a neon light on your prudery! Why not write "vagina"? Why not write "anus"? "privates" just sounds so childish and naff.

I don't think it is an honest protrayal of female sexuality. I think it will give at least American men the wrong idea that women are all crazy. I am sure women play with their blood and other bodily fuilds, but the tampon scene was something new to me. I guess my problem is why her parents would even care about her since she is so egotistic and uncaring about her body. It is like she'd die from blood loss to make a point. That was a bit scary to me and though a lot of this plays as black comedy, it also sends out a weird message about female sexuality.

I suppose if you take it from a punk rock angle, it makes sense. I liked that the movie took chances but there wasn't much of a pay off. I have seen worst punk rock films though.

I haven't seen a lot of negative comments due to pure prudism. It seems like a lot of people are suggesting that her actions take place in an unrealistic context (which I agree with).

I see this happen a lot on imdb, where a movie presents shocking scenarios for the sake of being shocking, and the people who like being shocked accuse others of being prudes, while many who don't appreciate shock for its own sake simply feel the overall story doesn't present a valid context for the actions being shown.

reply

I've seen a lot of movies that shock for the sake of being shocking (e.g. 90% of all horror films). This was not one of those. A lot of valid context here. Those who say that this movie claims to represent normal or typical female sexuality and use this as a reason for how wrong it all is, invent a claim that the movie does not make. That criticism may be valid for most porn movies, but not for Feuchtgebiete.

SPOILER
This is a girl with a severe psychological trauma and exhibitionist tendencies (or at least high openness to experience ;-). It isn't porn nor the portrait of an average woman.

8/10 Fantastic lead performance.

"8/10 Fantastic lead performance."

I'd increase that to 10/10.

reply

Yeah, you're wrong.
People can dislike movies without being 'prudes', and people are allowed not to like perverted, disgusting scenes, just like people are allowed to like them. If it's for you, fine. But it's not for other people. Nothing wrong with either of you. Stop being stupidly judgmental.
It's not honest at all.

Pfft what? Calling someone stupidly judge mental while saying they need professional help based on an internet comment. Yeah, that's not hypocritical at all is it?

reply

No, you're absolutely not wrong. It was a great movie. Any movie that can hold my attention for almost two hours has to be pretty good, as I have quite a low threshold of boredom. And having watched YouTube Vids of open heart surgery following my bypass, the blood and guts don't terrify me like they do some people.

reply

If I remember correctly, this movie wasn't that well received in its country of origin, Germany, either - and Germans are anything but prudes :-)

reply

Yes, she's a messed up and utterly stupid, ugly twerp. How does that make a remotely decent film?
