Adele

So, she essentially abandons her two kids to be with Simon in the end?

reply

SPOILER!
I think she actually died in the forest with Simon when she collapsed. She's been hardly eating, practically on edge & thinking she is going mad the whole time, & then goes through a traumatic pregnancy, believing the baby will be evil & trying to kill herself. Then she goes through the physical trauma of giving birth & doesn't seem to take any time to recover physically at all, just running on empty trying to work out what to do. I think she also hallucinated her dead police officer fiancé as no one else could see him so he hadn't returned. By the time she is searching for her baby & Chloe she is probably physically breaking down as well as losing it mentally.

She was definitely just hallucinating Thomas, which we know she did when Simon first died and well before the dead started returning. I agree about her dying in the forest though, and that last shot of those two definitely looked like it was meant to be them finally being united as a couple, the way they were supposed to be 10 years earlier. That indicates to me she has to be dead, because they coule never really be together while she was still alive. Definitely been left with more questions than answers after the finale though!

I love this idea, and I can't believe I didn't think of Adele dying BEFORE reaching the caves before now. I just wanted to add that, in addition to all of the reasons you mentioned for her possible death, I do feel that Simon's presence pushed her over the edge. The returned quite literally will suck the life out of you, if you somehow escape being manipulated by their presence or words into killing yourself. And I think this is what happened to Sandrine as well ... there was no real reason for her to just die out of the blue. The only people who seem immune (at least to a certain extent) are Julie and the vey unbreakable Chloe.

I agree.

It's interesting that Simon wasn't around when she collapsed. I kept expecting him to rush over to her, but he didn't.

Also, when she woke up she was somewhere else (the cave). Did Simon carry her there? Did he know what would happen inside?

reply

I agree - also notice how the clothes changed for both them at the end and how the contrast of the darkness of the cave to the light outside. It was also why Lucy could not return Nathan to them at the end either since they were gone.

reply

I noticed the change of clothes also, specifically for Adele. I was wondering why that happened, and her being dead explains it. The question is when did she die. I think it was in the cave. She was still wearing the same clothes when she went in.

Another thing that could point to her being dead is Chloe putting her head on Lena's lap at the end and basically joining that family.

reply

Who/what was the creepy half-dead/undead thing that took Adele's hand in the cave?

reply

No idea. But, we know from when that hole was investigated earlier in the season that some beings were down there. Not sure how they are connected to any of this.

reply

I think that's either a) how the returned really look or b) that's how they'll all eventually look as they are undead for longer. Those are best guesses, but I'm not sure which other theories there could be really!

reply

But why, after this scene, did the older twin look at Chole and see her sister?

Thought the same!

reply

OP, please put a spoiler tag in your thread's title so innocent IMDB users aren't lured into reading what happens. 

reply

Indeed! Grrrrrr.

reply

ugh so tired of this constant whine. Watch first, then go to message boards.

reply

Seconding the constant whining about this. No one "lured" you into coming to the message boards BEFORE you watch. I managed to avoid it. Why is the OP responsible for your lack of self-control? Spoiler tags shouldn't even exist.

reply

Don't be a complete idiot about things you don't understand, SteveB. I personally ended up watching the entire show long before the official English subtitles even became available, as did a bunch of others like me. We did our utmost to keep the Boards spoiler free so that the Brits and the Americans who were far behind us in following the show through official channels would still be able to come on here and discuss the earlier episodes without being spoiled. Understand that, for shows like this, there is a good chance that you might find people in foreign countries watching different episodes.

So, yes, I asked the OP to be effing considerate. Calling me a whiner MONTHS after I made the post (by which point everyone has got a fair chance to catch up anyway) makes you come across as thoughtless and unnecessarily aggressive.

Same goes for mandycw.

SPOILER

Madcap theory - Adele sucesfully commits suicide at the moment Victor raises the dead. She is pregnant with Thomas' child, who also diea and then comes back to life also. This is why the doctor tells Adele the child is consistent with 8 months of pregnancy rather than 6 months, which would be the case if he was Simon's son.

So, Adele has been dead the whole time. We know that Adele's son is dead from the "scratch" that appears on his arm when separated from his mother. That is how when she "dies" on the mountainside she is able to come back again
