They didn't really have a purpose at all, it wasn't intentional.
That makes so sense at all. His father wasn't dead and he knew it. He wasn't just wishing dead people to life.

We don't know for sure that Victor's adoptive father was dead or not; but we do know that Victor willed others back to life at that stage and as a result of Victor believing dad to be dead.
You may consider it a suspension of disbelief too far; but it's clearly there on the screen.
