IMDb rating

I have complained on several boards within IMDb about the weighted average.

But this is crazy! At the moment only 6 people have voted for this DVD/TV program.

Three have rated it 10/10, two have given it 9/10 and one person was offended and gave it 1/10. (Now I know that maybe all five who have rated it highly are members of Joan Rivers' family and are trying to artificially inflate the score).

But these votes give a median score of 9.5, a mode of 10 and an average of 8.2.

Using their stupid secret formula, IMDb has converted 8.2 to a weighted average of 1.6 !!! A drop of 6.6.

Now if I come to this page, not knowing the work of Joan Rivers, and wondering whether to watch this program when it hits my TV screens or whether to rent the DVD, I just see 1.6/10, think it is awful and don't watch it.

IMDb are providing misleading information that is costing the DVD distributors $$$. (Grounds for legal action??)

If IMDb insist on using a weighted average (particularly while they keep the formula secret) they should not list any weighted average, merely leaving the average blank, as they do now for programs with fewer than 5 voters. Better to have zero information than a clearly incorrect rating.

I was told, there'd be no math, on this thread!
