Medical marijuana = smuggling? Really?

So, I'm not a big fan of medical marijuana, but those Americans who have a legitimate prescription and a personal use amount should not be charged with smuggling! It's absurd! Canadian officials should just seize and destroy or place laws on books to honour a legal prescription for visitors, just like any other prescription they honour. Many other narcotics cause similar, sometimes worse, effects as marijuana. People shouldn't be disallowed to enter the country or be charged with smuggling when something is fully legal in their country/state of origin, especially when they are diplomatic, trade, economic, and military allies!

So because I can legally have an AK47 in my state I should be able to bring it into Canada?

Medicine, prescribed by a physician, is quite different than a weapon.

While I believe that the British/Canadian governments are not cool when it comes to firearms, it's, again, different than medicine.

Just leave it at home.

Again, medicine. I'm not a user, nor do I support it, but it's medicine to many. I have cancer patient friends that have it prescribed and it's the only thing that helps them. If they'd let prescribed oxycodone through, then they should let medical marijuana. Even most states in the U.S., that don't acknowledge medical marijuana as legal, will let a citizen go. They realize a doctor's prescription and it being legal in their home state (if traveling) is enough. Frankly, I have about zero interest in ever traveling to Canada, but their charging someone with smuggling all over prescribed meds certainly seals that deal.

The country should just turn them around tell them to take it back to their house or otherwise store it-- not charge for a crime...that's not a crime.

The people that say it is for medical reasons failed to offer proof that's why they are sent back. I assume they are all lying. Even if you are taking it for medicinal purpose, you can't self-medicate yourself and think authorities will believe you. I watched an episode last night in which he showed a doctor's prescription or card and they allowed him in.

Interesting. Glad to hear it. A valid and up-to-date prescription and matching ID should be more than enough as that's as far as law enforcement can take it here. Explaining your medical conditions is not necessary and would violate privacy and U.S. laws (without a warrant or other court order). Still, if they let someone through, good on them.

Thanks for the info!
