Rake remake? I thought bad idea but then I saw Greg Kinnear.....

would be the lead and I thought, wow, this could work. Kinnear is a perfect fit for the lead.

I don't know...

American remakes of Australian/British/Canadian TV shows and movies are notoriously bad.

Why is this likely to be different to any of the others?

reply

Disagree. Wilfred.

Sanford and Son.

Greg Kinnear - agreed
Wilfred is bad in any language!!

reply

Yep my thought as well, Kinnear is perfect for the role.

They got that much right, we'll have to see how well it translates to the US audience.

reply

Hi paulfitzpa,

The star of the Australian version, Richard Roxburgh, is producing the American version. Unless it's cancelled, it will find its way.

reply

Actually that was the opposite with me. I liked the Aussie show but I was curious to see the remake. Turns out Kinnear is completely wrong for the lead. I mean don't get me wrong, he's perfect for the likable loser parts but he's definitely nowhere near charismatic or attractive enough to make all the women throwing themselves on him within minutes anything less than ridiculous. He's handsome, in a guy next door kind of way but he's not exactly a hot ticket.

I like Kinnear but he's a miss on this. Could my opinion be influenced because I have seen the original? Maybe. Regardless, the new show just seems flat.

reply

Yes - flat, flat, flat. I just can't watch without missing the Aussie actors. This seems just a pale imitation. Season 3 of the Aussie version - HURRY TO THE US!!

reply

I marathoned through the AU version this past week and think that Dennis Leary would have been a better choice for the lead if they were to stay true to the original. But then, if that were the case, why remake perfection? I guess as long as money is to be made, there will be remakes. OTOH, without the remakes, I'd likely never know about the originals. So as long as the remakes don't push the originals off the shelf (so to speak), life is good.

reply

Yes, o need for a remake, but Denis Leary is an inspired choice. Rescue Me was was very good. Good call Sluggr.

reply

It's unfortunate but I think when you've seen the original of something you generally don't want to see it any other way. I've never seen the Aussie show and I think Kinnear is great in this. In fact, every time I watch it I'm newly impressed by him.

reply

Well he's better looking than Richard Roxburgh thats for sure. I never understood why women fell for him. Whenever I see him I think of the sleaze ball from Moulin Rouge. He's great in Rake, but definitely not attractive.

reply

For every Sanford and Son, there's Primeval: New World, Coupling, Ab Fab, Eleventh hour, life on mars, so the failure rate has to be around 80-90%.

reply

I've only watched the pilot and it just doesn't work. As others stated, Dennis Leary would have been the only hope of getting anywhere near close to Roxburg.

reply

s03e06 which just aired may have been Roxburgh's best performance yet, even after Cleaver having to do four separate trials, on the same day, in last weeks episode. I can't believe they are pulling the plug with this much momentum. Each of the four subplots this week would have been a decent ep for the US show. The casting is just totally off for the US show. Seriously, the AU Harry, sorry David, Potter just looks exactly like Harry Potter. The US guy looks like Frasier Crane with glasses. And no way will the US son grow up to be just like his dad.
