Over/Under on this show's cancellation?

Just wondering how many episodes most members think this awful show will be cancelled by? I say 6. But that may be a bit generous.

Sadly I think this is one of those shows too good to survive on network TV. With luck it will find a home on cable or netflix. Most shows outside of the comforting formulas enough to make the masses uncomfortable last 13 episodes. So that is my bet.

Yeah, network television has NEVER used the "Lovable Cad" concept before in it's history. I guess this show should go to cable to introduce that bold, innovative, groundbreaking idea.

reply

The fact that it has been awhile aside, it is not whatever simplex root premise you boil it down too. It's the writing and the interplay of characters.

"Shameless" would be the same premise on network TV but it would be a vastly different show owing to censorship and sponsor cowardice and the network not trusting it's audience. And still, watered down, it would be different enough from the normal formulas, to be cancelled in 13 episodes.

Hilarious.

This show reminds me of Terriers a bit. Probably getting cancelled because it doesn't have a laugh track.

reply

I was really looking forward to this show, but sadly I wasn't impressed. I'll go with your prediction and say 6 episodes. I doubt I'll notice when it's gone, though.

reply

This show blows. My instinct was to put the over under at 6 episodes too, but since you already did... I'm going to have to take the under. I honestly think it will go the full six, but I do not think it will make it to 7. So 5 for the win, 6 for the push, and I SERIOUSLY doubt I'll lose.

I hate to be the "The book was so much better" guy, but I watched the Australian original and it was better. It was better because this show is about debauchery and as such the Australian version had sex/nudity/violence/cursing. Because this is prime time Fox they have toned all of that down making the protagonist look more like an idiot than a degenerate. There is no substance to this show, good riddance.

reply

sounds about right. too bad for Kinnear and the other folks in the show, but it wont be missed.

The US formula is to take a great show from somewhere else and do a bad remake (see Showtime's "Episodes" as an example of the process). I'm hooked on the AU original. David "Harry" Potter actually looks like Harry Potter. Hollywood should find some marginal shows from other places and then do something novel like "improve" them.

Sadly, the character they have developed for Kinnear is just a "selfish butthole" with no redeeming chracteristics. The AU character is way more than that, especially when he realizes a client he originally believed was innocent was actually guilty, and then used his history of bad decisions to cover his deliberate attempt to undermine his own case. I would say that within the time frame of the episode, the AU version has about 3X as much stuff going on, and at least as many legitimate plot twists.

***** edit *****

Have to agree with marcalais. Putting this anywhere other than HBO or Skinemax was a mistake. It is like watching the Sopranos on PAX (now ION). Just watch the original. I guarantee it will not disappoint. Cleaver Greene is the Walter White of the legal world.

reply

I have to agree as well. The original series is basically Californication starring a lawyer instead of a writer. Its the debauchery along with the coarse languge and crudeness of the character that makes it fun.

I like this version too and Im axtually surprised how trued it stayed to the original sgow, even incorporating the same storylines. But being on network Tv has watered it down. If this show was on Showtime, lol OMG!!! It would go farther than the original with all kinds of deformity.

But instead we have a show that cant really push those boudaries, even on Fox.

But I will be watching every episode until its gone. :)

reply

Then I guess I enjoy those types of series I like Californication too.

reply

Definitely too good to last, but
I thought the same about Community and its still going.

reply

I wish they wouldn't do shows like this. The premise of the show is unsustainable: a likable guy who wins impossible court battles but has that little problem. The audience desperately wishes he could quit gambling, but that would destroy the premise of the show. There will be times when he's tantalizingly close to quitting, but we all know that will be short lived. You can get away with ongoing antisocial behavior in a show like Dexter because secretly we all want him to keep the carnage going. Sadly, that will never be the case with Rake, and it will never last. 6 episodes.

I caught up with the series On Demand and have really enjoyed it. Hope they don't cancel it.

Looks like I'm coming in right on the money with the 13 I predicted. What was the wager again?

Looks like it is it now Onion-Jack.

Though it seems it will be 12 episodes, as Mammophile which was supposed to be Ep 6 is still missing in action (they're airing Remembrance Of Taxis Past and Man's Best Friend this week).

Fox‘s low-rated mid-season series Rake will end its run sooner than expected and on a different night. The drama, which originally aired on Thursday, was bumped to Fridays where it was to air its final two episodes this and next week. Instead, Rake‘s last two episodes will run back-to-back this Saturday, April 5.

On Friday, April 4, Fox will air a repeat of the last season finale of Kitchen Nightmares leading to the hour long series finale of Raising Hope.

Kitchen Nightmares‘ new season, which continues a storyline from the last cycle as it is set at the same restaurant, will debut as planned next Friday, but with a two-hour episode instead of one hour behind Rake. In fact, the Gordon Ramsay series is slated to air two-hour segments through May 2.

Was episode 6 "Patient Zero"? That one aired here in Canada at least. Looking at the episode list I can't see one of the 13 listed that I didn't watch.

Where it says on IMDb at the bottom Ep 13 Mammophile 11 April 2014, that was supposed to be episode 06 and hasn't been aired. The 2 episodes listed on Fox's TV Guide for Saturday are Remembrance Of Taxis Past and Man’s Best Friend.

The episode synopsis for Mammophile is:

From Spoiler Guide: http://www.spoilersguide.com/rake/episode-6-mammophile-guide/).

A mother and son both confess to committing the same murder on an all-new Rake Thursday, February 27, on Fox.

Keegan must use a highly unusual tactic to defend a new client (guest star Brian Baumgartner) and his mother (guest star Debra Mooney), who both confess to committing the same murder, in order to protect the other.

Meanwhile, as a result of Finn’s school auction, Keegan is stuck with Louis (guest star River Alexander), an annoying boy whose father was the only bidder on the “A Day with a Lawyer” auction item.

Also, Keegan discovers that Mikki is dating someone he knows.
