Ditmas Park

Loved this. This was hilarious. So New York too. How they move to this affordable untapped un-williamsburg neighborhood in awe of front porches and tree-lined streets thinking they could convince their hipster friends follow them there only finding themselves so isolated that they can't even buy weed.

Which episode was this?

And I just googled it (I didn't know which exact neighborhood is referred to as Ditmas Park) - it's not a good or nice-looking neighborhood.

I lived there. Ditmas is a gorgeous neighborhood. It is, however, NOT affordable (at least none of the places on the pretty, tree-lined streets are) and it is full of hipsters. It started to gentrify at least 10 years ago.

Isn't it all Haitian? I am well familiar with Foster, Newkirk and other avenues in the Flatbush Ave area. What hipsters?

I live in the area and loved that episode, its so true. The flatbush area begins around ocean ave and east, where i live which is mainly carribean but more and more gentrified every day (i was the last person of color who moved in my building on e21 two years ago and now they are trying to push me out).

The side the show and this thread is referring to is closer to coney island ave, it looks like the suburbs there are houses that are literal mansions...its been referred to as "historic flatbush" or Ditmas Park. A google image search of ditmas park will show you. Have you seen Cortelyou rd lately?? It looks more like park slope, organic food coop, healing centers, they have night bars with backyards and popup vendors...one that is a damn flower shop by day.

The specific pocket the show referrs to is btween beverley rd and church, coney island ave being the border. its a whole different world..like you are no longer in brooklyn. I like to go on runs there to clear my head, very green with calm streets

Hopefully someone could link the episode, its one of my favorites. Omg the Q train when it deciedes its only running local that day..good luck finding a dollar van in Ditmas park! D:

Okay, I watched it online, but I am sorry, it's just ridiculous. It's so much closer to Manhattan than the rest of Brooklyn, all these people are acting like it's Mill Basin or something. It's also very accessible - I mean, just for the sake of comparison, you'd have to go through Manhattan to get to a "hip" (and awful, IMO) area like Bushwick from anywhere in Brooklyn except Williamsburg. What is "out there" supposed to mean?? To me Williamsburg is "out there" - I live in the middle of Brooklyn, and it's like a good 40-minute drive. It's practically Queens.

Oh, and the Q train runs so much better than the L or the G - it's like whom are they kidding??

And who the f is Sufjan Stevens?

But of course, what do I know, I am not a "hipster".

reply

i agree that its not out there, its pretty central but the Q train does trip up, as does the L/G train..as well as every other line. But "Out there" is relative, to them Willysburg is central, where all their friends are. So for the Guy to bike from willys to ditmas may be out there. its all relative

I don't know who Sufjan is ether
...also, I don't think this show is for you

reply

Oh, I am definitely not the target audience, I never even felt whatever high people are supposed to get when smoking pot.
I'll give it one more chance tonight, and that will probably be it for me.

My stupid friends won't even come out to Astoria.
