What's up with the constant background roar on the soundtrack?

I was OK with the constant background roar in the background when the setting was next to the ocean, but it made no sense whatsoever in the desert, which, if anything, is normally maddeningly silent. It really started to drive me crazy, as did the long takes of nothing of any interest. I can't believe I watched this until the end...
