First Fifteen Minutes? (Spoiler alert)

I missed the first fifteen minutes (circling around in the Friday night SF city looking for parking)... Can someone explain what happened at the beginning of the film? Thanks in advance!

In a nutshell: There is a long exposition of the landscape of the pampas and a Danish captain leading some sort of project with local soldiers. The captain is sitting alone with his daughter, she asks for a dog and he says she will get one when they get back home. He tells her this land is no place for a girl like her. Then it cuts to one of the men, Lieutenant (something with a P? The grey-haired man), who tells the captain that there is a big dance coming up and asks if he can take the Captain's daughter to the dance. The captain firmly rejects and gets noticeably upset as the Lieutenant then says he wants to invite her to his ranch, teach her to ride, give her a horse, etc. The captain storms off and warns his daughter not to go anywhere near that man, that he is too fond of little girls. I am probably already past the first 15 minutes here . . .
