Movie Title

Seems as if this movie now has a title: Jauja. Can anyone tell me what that means?

reply

Jauja is a city in Peru. In colonial times it was the first capital of Spanish Peru, which at the time was the most profitable colony for the Spaniards. Its value was so renown to Spain and by extension to Europeans immigrants to South America that it birthed the phrase "Are we really here, or are we in Jauja?" or another translation "Have you forgotten where you are? Do you think this is Jauja?" In colonial times up to perhaps the late 19th century it would have been used to express a condemnatory feeling for a present situation. The person saying it would be reprimanding themselves or another's attitude or actions as importunate or unworthy in light of the situation.

Loss and being lost appear to be themes of the film. You can probably already tell how adequate the title is.

Thanks so much for that information. Very interesting. I hope I get a chance to see the final film.

It will probably turn up at some festivals, but Alonso's films are regarded as experimental (though I don't think Alonso thinks they are). I've never seen his previous films, though I've heard of them and read reviews. This one might get wider distribution because of Viggo Mortensen, the first professional actor Alonso has ever used. But I expect DVD is most likely. And remember, it's not in English, which will make it even harder to find.

Good luck to those of us who would like to see it.

All his films I've seen aren't in English. In fact, very little is being said there, and I do not expect a change.

Thanks for the remarkable insight.

Will this movie be played in the United States? His American fans miss him, but i understand he is going to do a movie in Washington State?

VM has been shooting in the mountains of Washington State -- and was spotted in local bookstores and chocolate shops , but they're now shooting more of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (not about a superhero) in New Mexico.

As for JAUJA, it's unlikely to play anywhere outside of art houses. I'm hoping for a showing in my town, but I'm not sure I'm going to like the film. Still, I will see it if I can. As with some of David Cronenberg's work, I don't have to like it to appreciate the artistry, and Alonso has quite a reputation.

It also serves as a synonym for paradise (Viggo explained it at an interview)

I always thought it was how native Georgians, as in the state in USA, said Georgia. Jauja.
