The Ending is such a slap in the face and a let down

Obvious spoilers ahead.

Ok, I didn't think this movie was great, just ok and harmless, at least until the end. The first one was more entertaining, had a bit more heart and different situations, and much more energy. I would have particularly liked to see more of the great grand father, and not just in the climax. I was expecting him a lot sooner and to be a bigger part in the movie, it would have made the conflict more interesting. But I digress.

What really killed my semi-enjoyment of the film was when they decided to make the kid a vampire.

I mean, why? They spend the whole film trying to make Drac comes to term that not everything will always go his way, and that he has to accept that his daughter will have to leave to start her family life on their own at one point or another and that the kid will not turn out to be exactly how he hopes to, but that's ok because he loves him anyway. I also thought it was very sweet how the young werewolf girl was still loving Denis despite the fact that he was a human. This was good messages and a theme that I thought the movie handled quite well.

However, when the kid became a vampire, everything became meaningless and pointless. Denis was just another part of this world, he had no more conflict to go through, Drac got everything he wanted (his daughter and his grand son "had" to stay with him now) and even the great grand father was again a part of the family.

So the message is "we will accept you and love you no matter who you are, but still less that if you become everything we always expected of you".

Really dissapointing, it's like if at the end of "Shrek 2", Fiona and Shrek had stayed humans...

I agree, I was really disappointed in the decision to turn him into a vampire. Not only did it defeat the message the movie had been making, but I also thought it would be a lot more interesting (if another sequel is planned) seeing a human child growing up surrounded by monsters who can do things he can't.

I enjoyed the movie, but I was really hoping he would turn out to be human.

reply

I had the same problem as you. Because of Drac's selfish uncompassionate overbearing behavior I was really looking forward to him eating some serious crow when Dennis turned out to be human but no,

reply

No slaps for me, I got exactly what I wanted. I was rooting for Dracula the whole time and was ecstatic when Dennis went vampire mode. He was just a late fanger, the real crime was Mavis trying to move her family to California. Even a slacker like Johnny knew the horrors of living in California.

"Unless you're an alien, time traveler, or esper, your opinion doesn't matter. "

reply

If it was played only for laughs and comedy or pure action, I would have no problem with it. However, it's the whole theme of the movie there, the whole conflict and the whole drama, and it was played very seriously. To have such a cheap resolution is dissapointing at best.

I was expecting some kind of power or hybridation, that would allow him to relate to monsters (super strenght, flight, a special power only for half human), but not to go complete vampire mode god on every bat at the end... Because I'm sorry, I know it's a cartoon, but to be as powerful as a millenium vampire at 5 years old...

reply

Mavis trying to get her family to move to California bugged me more than anything. Especially since the only reason she backed down was because Dennis went full vampire. So much for what he is not mattering, eh? And talk about heartless. She didn't care about her husband, son, or father's feelings about the move at all. She was just going to up root them against their wills. And why? Slurpees and yuppies that tried too hard to be accepting?

reply

Me too but I knew people would feel this way. Instead of enjoying the movie they have to find some sort of political correctness spin.

We get it, everyone is different. The movie went on for 75 minutes making drac realize he could love Dennis either way. So not sure how him turning into a vampire at the end makes the first part of the movie's message any less important.

reply

Exactally. If he's loved either way, then he must be loved either way.

People complain that they had to accept him as human and then he became vampire as they prefered. But shouldn't these people rethink themselves? If he's loved either way, then it doesn't matter at all!

reply

What did you expect? It's an Adam Sandler movie.

reply

The ending was just a rip-off of The Incredibles. The baby suddenly turning into a monster and defeating the villain.

reply

That's no reason to be a bad movie anyway, even if Sandler has obviously lost his touch with decent comedy and drama a long time ago.

Still, it was mostly for me a Genndy Tartakovsky movie, so I was expecting a bit more...

reply

I actually don't mind Dennis becoming a vampire. That was kind of cute, especially the reason as to how. What bugged me was "Since I'm a vampire does this mean I can stay ant the hotel?" and Mavis says "Yes." So much for what he is not mattering. What he is should not have anything to do with if they stay at the hotel or not. That undermined everything!

reply

That's what I meant when I said that Denis becoming a vampire ruined everything. As soon as it is done, everything goes according to Drac's plan and wishes. He get to keep his grand son, his daughter and he even reconciles with his dad.
Everyone is "happy" only because Dennis has fangs, basically. It changes nothing about who he is inside, but now he is "normal" and accepted. So that means that it mattered a whole lot if everyone is happier with Dennis being a vampire than being a human.
It would have been a bit better if they had a quick discussion about how it doesn't change who he is deep down, but no, they went directly to a danse scene, and I got pissed at the movie...
This is why the first two Shrek were brillant in this regard, they went the whole way regarding the message about love and appareances.

It also bothered me that Jonathan expressed nothing about his son and what he thought was best for him. It was all Mavis and Drac concerns, the guy was just following through the motion.

reply

I was hoping for a conversation confirming that they would have stayed at the hotel and Mavis realized that's where her son and husband were happy and where even she was most comfortable but no. Instead it's indicated that his being a vampire was very necessary for all of them "or else!"

reply

I didn’t care to be honest.

Although I wanted the kid to be a vampire, I was more bothered from the plot break near the end more than for this turn of events.

Also I don’t think that’s so bad. Drac became a hotel owner and Vlad only came to the hotel just for his grandson. The movie talks about expectations and that the elders always root to the old ways. And it’s normal. They experienced different things and what they really want is not meeting their expectation as much as to experience the joys they were fortunate to have. In the end you just accept that things can be different and experiences cannot always be the same whether you are the same or not. That means that Danny as a vampire or a human was meant to experience things differently. Also Jonathan got married and had a kid with the same joy as his parents but in a slightly different world.

Finally we are always want what made us happy and we think it can be experienced the same way by the next generation but we forget that we didn’t necessarily follow the previous generations was either. Mavis wanted for her son the difference she never experienced but wanted Danny to live in the monster society otherwise she would have moved once she knew she was pregnant. Jonathan wanted out of his normal life but was willing to cave in. As for Drac and Vlad they were holding up to the past.

In any case, I think that the message could easily be that we have certain parts in us that are inherited and even if we are not carbon copies we still make our own choices which cannot be forced from where we come from. You can live with monsters f you are human, you can be a superhero and a vampire, being a monster doesn’t mean be bad and finally what makes us different is again our choices.

reply

The next movie could also explore Dennis' half-blood nature and how he finds he's inherited the best and possibly the worst of two worlds.

While I have not yet seen the 2nd, I totally understand your point. As a handicaped person myself, I realy saw a opportunity in Denis not "being able" to have all the powers of his relatives as an illustration of handicaped persons (and actually for anyone who can relate to such a situation).

Now, that said, I´m still going to see it when it hits the cinemas here, because I still belive it has heart.

reply

So, I haven't seen the movie yet and I already know how it ends? KInd'a figured that would happen at the end for some reason. Hmm, looking foreard to watching it.
