Hotel Transylvania 2 Decent but mild complaint (Spoiler inside)

So I just saw Hotel Transylvania 2. And yes, it is funnier and more enjoyable than the first Hotel Transylvania. I just have one complaint. One little thing undermines the entire moral of the film.

The whole film is about how it doesn’t matter what you are and that those that love you will accept you. The whole film is about how even if he is human Dennis will be accepted. However Mavis gives serious consideration to moving to California and nearly does even though Dennis AND Jonathan clearly want to stay in Transylvania.

Here’s the spoiler. Toward the end of the film it’s revealed that Dennis actually is a vampire. His vampirism emerges when his best friend / possible future romantic interest, the little werewolf girl is in trouble. Here’s the problem. The whole film has this ham handed message about acceptance and how it doesn’t matter what Dennis is. Yet it does. It really, really does. As soon as things calm down he asks “Since I’m a vampire does this mean we can stay at the hotel?” And Mavis says “Yes.” Just yes. Nothing about how she might have stayed if she had just known and accepted that’s what he really wanted. This “cute” moment under cuts the entire message of the film.

I know that as an adult I’m probably over analyzing but it kind of bothers me because otherwise it’s a very sweet and funny film.

I actually don't mind Dennis becoming a vampire. That was kind of cute, especially the reason as to how. What bugged me was "Since I'm a vampire does this mean I can stay ant the hotel?" and Mavis says "Yes." So much for what he is not mattering. What he is should not have anything to do with if they stay at the hotel or not. That undermined everything!

I agree.

and also to add to that, dracula is also saying he loves dennis regardless of what he is but he then proceeds to try and force dennis to turn.

the movie was good fun to watch but i felt like the first is better.

I enjoyed the sequel.

Please ignore the AmandaPikea person. They are using my name (My real name is Amanda Pike) and my facebook photo to troll. It's a sadistic psychological tactic attempt to drive me off of IMDB. I usually just ignore them but they are using my name and image to post vulgar things on boards for family shows and movies and it's nauseating.

In my opinion, the only reason that the acceptance message is dropped and Dennis becomes a vampire is ACTION PACKED CLIMAX!!!!!!!!!

Well, I'd say it probably will be done when it's done,
but that's only an approximate guess.

I mean, why? They spend the whole film trying to make Drac comes to term that not everything will always go his way, and that he has to accept that his daughter will have to leave to start her family life on their own at one point or another and that the kid will not turn out to be exactly how he hopes to, but that's ok because he loves him anyway. I also thought it was very sweet how the young werewolf girl was still loving Denis despite the fact that he was a human. This was good messages and a theme that I thought the movie handled quite well.

However, when the kid became a vampire, everything became meaningless and pointless. Denis was just another part of this world, he had no more conflict to go through, Drac got everything he wanted (his daughter and his grand son "had" to stay with him now) and even the great grand father was again a part of the family.

So the message is "we will accept you and love you no matter who you are, but still less that if you become everything we always expected of you".

Really dissapointing, it's like if at the end of "Shrek 2", Fiona and Shrek had stayed humans...

While I have not yet seen the 2nd, I totally understand your point. As a handicaped person myself, I realy saw a opportunity in Denis not "being able" to have all the powers of his relatives as an illustration of handicaped persons (and actually for anyone who can relate to such a situation).

Now, that said, I´m still going to see it when it hits the cinemas here, because I still belive it has heart.
