Riley is autistic? I'm not seeing it.

I really don't wanna be one of the political correctionists but at the start it said they found the camera of autistic 11 year old riley and I'm kinda incensed. Why the F does it matter or have any relevance? It's like saying "11 year old black kid riley". Now I'm like 10 minutes in and Riley has had several scenes and lines. I'm sorry, but he's not fing autistic. I spent a big portion of my childhood at the community for children with disabilities and yes I'm aware autism comes in all shapes and sizes but there's just no way. So far the people in this movie are just annoying as hell and I'm already pissed. ....and the dad just punched his "autistic" kid. Done. F this movie.

I didnt see it either....and it got really weird for me when the redneck called him retarded or something of that matter and the boy had barley said any words while in his presence...it was like they were trying to drive it into you that he was autistic but it didnt even matter to the plot.

It's probably -aspergers- in the autism spectrum. Smart but socially challenged, awkward kids. My son has Aspergers.

He didn't look autistic to me. Except for that monotoned voice.

I think they made him like that to explain why he kept filming..

Kjeks.

How could you spend a good portion of your life working with kids like that and NOT know that autism runs the spectrum from very mild like aspergers to autistics that literally can't speak.
The character of Riley was a perfect example of an aspy kid. The way he's fixated on animals, especially moths and butterflies. The way he repeats certain things over and over. And the way he uses the camera as a way to communicate.
What may have been out off character was the way he broke down and cried when he looked into the camera and said I'm scared, all my family is gone.
Kids with aspergers show little emotion. But there's no black and white all kids are different so who knows

He was artistic, hence the camera.

What an utter contradiction.

The most believable thing in the entire movie was this kid's portrayal as a high-functioning autistic.

I am not!
Goddammit!
