ENOUGH with the movies about chefs!

Burnt, Chef, Ratatouie, the list goes on and on.

Am I the only one who is literally sick to death of movies about chefs?

All it does is glorify a basic and overpaid job and lead to our nation getting fatter and fatter. There's no imagination in it!

The only chef film I want to see is one where the chef stops selling unhealthy food and starts pushing a healthier agenda, every chef I've ever met is overweight and disgusting. At least Bradley Cooper is fit, although I hope there are scenes of him exercising in admist of all the shots of him stuffing his face!

Hopefully next year they start making movies about people with jobs that actually contribute something worthwhile to society. Who's with me?

reply

Burnt, Chef and Ratatouille have been released over the course of about 8 years. I really can't think of other movies about chefs off the top of my head. There have been very few chef movies in previous years. To be honest, I'd like to see some more.

reply

What are you, a chef? They're not gonna make a movie about you lol

reply

No, I never said I wanted a chef movie made about me, that's absurd. What I am stating is that there are hardly any "Chef" movies in the mainstream film industry. I don't know why you seem irritated.

reply

Actually more than two chef movies is already excessive for such a mundane job no matter how much the story diverts into real life common situations as an attempt at redemption.

Put it in context. There are millions of jobs out there in the world, most of which are equally as unimportant as being a chef, but only a few receive equal traction in movies.

reply

There are also 2 movies about a lawn mower man. That's even more mundane. 3 about chefs doesn't seem so bad in that context.

reply

Mundane? Unimportant? Your ignorant outlook baffles me. I am a chef in the food service industry and there's a reason we have an entire channel and multiple shows/movies/competitions etc. based on the lives on chefs. It is most certainly not mundane. It is a job that is both physically and emotionally taxing, we never stop moving working 10+ hours a day. Far more than that of the average 9-5 working man/woman.

I learn something new everyday and gain the utmost satisfaction from knowing my food is making people happy. I am not for that matter overweight, no one in my kitchen is. That is a common misconception.

It's astonishing that you see our careers in a such a way and that you would so quickly judge but I assure you our jobs are not "mundane." Please think twice before bashing the thousands of us that make a living through feeding others. Not all films are accurate representations of the everyday life of a chef. Just as I do not know your everyday goings in the workplace, you do not know mine.

reply

Right on bro. I love great food from all over the world and there's nothing I won't try once. And thanks to the dedication of people like you, life is good. I can't really think of another industry that brings as much joy to so many people as yours. Ignore idiots like the one above.

reply

I'm with you two. Chefs do a very valuable job, they work very hard, they are awesomely dedicated, and they offer you the product of years of 24-7 learning, experience and love. And every chef movie I've seen has been different and good to excellent. Many Americans like to make a fetish of being ignorant of the finer things in life. It is of a piece with their rampant anti-intellectualism and jingoism. The poor things! They are missing many of the things that make life worth savoring, not just getting through. And they don't even know it.

reply

Foulk_you, ignore these ignorant half brained imbeciles who sit on their arm chairs and pass judgement on everyone in the world.
You don't need to have any sort of skill to talk *beep* All you need to do is wag your tongue like a dog and out comes the spit and drivel. If you dont like movies about chefs why the heck did you watch it? It's like people who hate rock going to a rock concert and talking *beep* about rock music. Useless idiots.

reply

Exactly! I was going to post a similar reply but I knew someone already had. Cynical people like this op can beep off. Yes why did they watch the film, look it up on imdb and bother to post this thread? I feel sorry for whoever it is. And yes it is a tough business and I give Chef's credit for their hard work.

reply

How about people get some self-control instead of their self-pity which leads to obesity? Food isn't the way to happiness, it can be, but if you take it way too far it won't. Blaming the source for the consequence? Give me a break. Because drugs exist we all have to blame the drugdealers? Yet most of us people aren't drug addicts... Just shut up trying to defend obese people, they didn't entirely do it to themselves but no one tells them to eat what they did, that's all on them.

It's that easy for me. Most people are weak and stupid, though. Combine that with cheap, calorie dense food everywhere and you have a lot of fatties.

reply

[deleted]

So what? Stupid people dying early is hardly something to grieve about.

What are you, a vegan?

Well, I'm a chef and I don't want the movie made about me. And as in modern TV there is a lot of shows about chefs and there is a false sense about that. And over my career I met plenty of chefs and maybe 2% of them where fat and disgusting and the rest of them are in good shape, many of them going to gym and passionate about food. The problem is, that with all that chef TV shows on the TV right now, even a canteen cook would like to call himself a chef, so maybe you just have the wrong sense of what that word means?

Also, refering to OP, there is not a lot of movies about chefs and when I was watching Ratatouille I didn't even think of it as a movie about a chef. There is also a lot of comic book adaptations, world war II movies, movies about robots (yeah, let's go generic if Ratatouille is about chefs) and nobody's shouting ENOUGH!

[Edit]
Oh, and due to the popularity of this profession on TV right now - I agree with the popularity, but most certainly it is not overpaid job.

The research was done mostly in Canada, but it pretty much aplies to every place I worked in.

I'm not the OP, but I'm curious to know what's up with the out-of-the-blue derogatory comment about vegans?

reply

They contribute to the killing and consumption of poor defenseless plants and vegetables ... evil swine!

reply

Oh, well, might be hard to explain, but chefs will understand. I'll try anyway.

Veganism is a diet of choice, not of health issues. Vegetarians are allright, because most menus have vegetarian options, but vegans are ones who are crossing the line. Chef's purpose is to make the meal tasty. When a vegan shows up and demands a meal (yes, they mostly not asking, they are just demanding), chef is mostly unfairly challenged how to make it tasty as most kitchens don't even stock in vegan-friendly products. And they cross the extra mile to tell you about their veganism - there are friggin internet memes about them, and I actually find them - if not hilarious - then at least accurate.

For couple of years as a chef I dealt with a lot of people with allergies of some kind, but that was OK, since they couldn't eat some kind of food. But vegetarians, vegans, etc. CHOSE their diet and they seem to be bitching every time they can't get what they want. I personally think it is OK to be a vegetarian only if you stick to salads and veggies. Skip that *beep* veggie burger and veggie sausage. If you want to be a vegetarian or vegan, don't fool yourself eating vegetable food imitating meat, okay?

I was working in a big volume hotel once and some company choose to hold conferences for five consecutive days in there. They had different meal for lunch and dinner every day, that was fine, but they had this one damn bitch with them... They gave me the list of her allergies that was ONE PAGE LONG and the allergies for such common things as tomatoes, tangerines, cheese and beans where listed there among with common ones like lactose or gluten. They asked me to speak with her personally and ask her what meals she would like then and what products I could use. She was pale, skinny and looked very unhealthy. As soon as I offered her tuna or chicken, she announced she's vegetarian. I was like 'Bitch, seriously?!'. You can't eat most of the food from the supermarket and then you chose to be a *beep* vegetarian?! Although her co-workers where complimenting my food, I was pretty much unable to provide her with varied and tasty meals every day, and of course she started bitching about it and making complains. And she was rude as hell!

That's where my comment about vegans comes from. Chef is someone who takes a grouse or octopus and tries to make it tasty and unusal for you. People with diet of choice come in and say "I won't eat that!" and expect you to do the same with potato. And of course we can make potato tasty or unusal (given the right resurces), but it doesn't match the octopus, so we feel uncomfortable with such meal. And more than 50% of the time, people with diet of choice are unhappy of what chef did for them.

It's like people going to Sony store looking for Kinect, walking out with PS Camera and being unhappy about it.

reply

If the list goes "on and on" then why don't you list more than 3 movies? And there are only fat chefs? Try harder at trolling next time because you're not very good at it.

reply

As trolling goes, that's not bad. Made me chuckle.

reply

while we're at it what's with all these damn movies about world war II? geez! enough already! it's been done.. we get it

beside that, you clearly have no clue what goes on in a kitchen.. the job neither basic nor overpaid, and is full of imagination

but i'm just feeing the troll when i should ignore it

reply

Honestly, I never even knew this was an issue.

reply

wow..you must be a blast to hang out with. what a weird thing to complain about..

reply

Chefs are amazing people, like Gods even! They put food in an oven and it comes out cooked. You can't explain that!

reply

Your rant/list consists of THREE movies made over a span of 8 years, please expand on your list of "chef" movies or shut the hell up. "every chef I've ever met is overweight and disgusting" OH REALLY!?!?!? You obviously don't get out much.

And NO I am not a Chef.
