ending made the entire film implausible

I assumed this was in the future. As if the director was saying, "This is where society is headed." It seemed like the equivalent of porn really.

I thought it may have been a scam in which the murders are fake but people still pay money to see them believing they are real. There are lots of sick people out there so maybe people made a website wanting to prey on their gullibility. Kind of an "it was all a dream" type ending.
