Poor Spencer...

Poor poor delusional, living in a pipe dream and a world of false hope Spencer. He has a very serious psychological disorder and definitely has some kind of abandonment issues. If you watched the ep there's no further explanation needed. He needs serious therapy to determine what is causing all this.

Oh, and one more thing...you just read my signature.

I agree. It was skirting around stalker-town for me. Not that he was doing that to the real Katy Perry but, I don't know. If he hadn't woken up and smelt the coffee, who knows what path he would have gone to prove that it really was her. Reading into the clues in the songs and whatnot.

I can kind of see how it might happen...he really wanted it to be true, the other girl was a big fan so she knew a lot...he had this whole fantasy built up in his head that he completely believed in. For the past six years, he secretly "knew" he was talking to Katy Perry. I can imagine him watching her on TV, with Russel Brand, the superbowl, whatever else, feeling secretly special that he knows the "real" her or something. So I guess six years of that would be hard just to un-believe.

Anyway. I feel bad but it was sadly delusional. I hope he really IS zero on the scale of 1 to 10 that Max kept bringing up...

reply

I felt sorry for him. It's a real mental disorder that causes people to be delusional. They shouldn't have done this episode. They should've sent him straight to Dr. Phil.

reply

That guy was so deluded, it was hard to watch. He just REFUSED to believe that it wasn't the real Katy Perry, which should've been obvious from the start; why would she look for "love" online? Even after it was over and the catfish was revealed he STILL refused to accept reality. First off, if a someone messaged me claiming to be -insert famous person- then I'm going to immediately call bs without a second thought because it's 99.999% hoax. He must be missing something in his life for him to latch on to such a ludicrous dream while fully believing it to be reality, even going as far as to find "hidden meanings" in her songs (I mean come on, dude).

I think he definitely needs some counseling and I don't think he really gave up after the episode was over, despite what he told Nev and Max. I don't think they believed him either but it was hilarious seeing their reactions and facial expressions to this guy's story because all the evidence was right there, particularly Nev as he seemed to be getting a bit irritated with Spencer at times because he refused to face facts.

OMG As sad as this story was, I couldn't stop laughing every time! And when the brother found out...

Spencer: I've found someone I love, we've been talking for 6 years, I want to marry her...
Brother: WOW! THAT'S GREAT!!!
Spencer: It's Katy Perry...
Brother: 

Like, I can't believe that Spencer actually thought he was talking to THE Katy Perry. I mean, how gullible can one be? Plus, she's with ORLANDO BLOOM (this part alone, I still can't wrap my head around)! I don't think she'd be with Legolas, jet-setting all around the world, and then all of a sudden, chatting up some normal Joe Blow...

It's just sad. I'm sure Spencer is a great guy (beautiful ring), but he needs to get his head out of the clouds and face reality.

I couldn't understand why the brother didn't have more of a reaction. He just sort of went with it and encouraged Spencer, indicating he was happy for him. It just was so strange. The poor kid has issues, and I think the brother didn't want to aggrivate things.

I watch this as a guilty pleasure, real or fake, I don't really care much. I wasn't all that botherd by the ones that were "set ups" by the people to catfish the show, or even the psychic episode. For me at home, it's fun & games that don't affect me..but I was disturbed by this episode for a number of reasons.

Firstly because I think he had issues. Well, actually I kept going back and forth from "he has mental health issues" to "ok, this is off the rails fake". I haven't really ruled out that it could be both. The girl came across as phony too, but also at points seemed genuinely surprised that the kid still believed her. I don't recall what backround info they gave regarding her, but I didn't detect much of an accent either. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I was curious about it. I don't recall if they mentioned either of their ages.

Regarding the ring, before we met the brother (who was almost as odd as Spencer) I thought for sure that he would go ballistic over Spencer using a precious family heirloom ,such a beautiful stone, and put it into an engagement ring for a total stranger (famous or not).
He really did seem like a good guy, and he treated her very nicely when they met up the second time..but then to turn around and email her after the fact, still thinking it was KP he was talking to was so odd. I could see him being stalkerish towards somebody at some point. Did they say why he emailed that, to the same email address he had been corrosponding with from the begining? He was already told that it was not a true email address...

strange, just strange!!

His brother knows him. Spencer reminds me of my youngest daughter who is 23 years old and suffers from Asperger's. People with Asperger's don't understand or pick up on social cues and things that a "normal" person would pick up on, and tend to accept what people say at face value rather than read a little deeper into it. When people tell me daughter things, she tends to believe them completely (because of this, she has been ripped off online by people who sell things and never send them to her).

So I'm willing to bet that Spencer suffered from at least a mild form of Asperger's.

Yeah, I was leaning a bit that way too. That his brother maybe knew that how he reacted to it all would either keep things "smooth sailing" for Spencer, or if he reacted negativly it could have all gone sideways. So bro just stayed an even course.
So you think maybe Spencer may have Aspergers? I am not too familiar so I didn't pick up on it. I'm sad to hear that people would take advantage of your daughter like that online. The way we treat others, wether they seem different from ourselves or not, just baffles me. Just the idea that a person's first thought would be to "take advantage" rather than embrace them just is so backwards to me.

Because people that are missing something in their own lives and/or hate themselves feel that they need to treat others poorly to make themselves feel better about themselves and have control. It's sick but it's common, sadly.

Initially I was wondering about his brother's reaction to his brother thinking he was actually talking to Katy Perry but after reading some of these other posts, I can see where he could be coming from. Maybe his brother did know something about Spencer and knew to gauge his reaction.

I wondered if it was fake, too. But...I'm thinking Spencer might be real. Or he's a good actor lol. Because someone acting it might OVERact it, you know? But he stayed pretty understated which makes me think it's more real. Or something.

As for Hannah's accent...she was Canadian, right? She was from Canada but had moved to England. Hence no British accent.

reply

oh goodness! Thank you! I don't know how I missed that she was Canadian. I kept wondering why there was a Canadian cell # involved, what the connection was that I was missing. duh..lmao.
I am on the fence about him, and have the same thoughts as you. It was understated yet had the potential for him to have just gone nuts, but he didn't. For all of us on the outside looking in, it was obviously a bizarre situation that was easy to spot as him being catfished. I just kept waivering...lol At times I felt like they just wanted to meet, but then we saw her reaction to when he said he still believed he was talking to KP.
I just keep scratching my head..lol
All in all..I was entertained!

I was so sure that he'll just snap at Nev at any second for ruining his fantasy.

What was the point of the girl acting like she was straight for six years and in love with the guy? Does anyone else find that pretty twisted?

reply

She was using him to fulfill an emotional need.

Maybe the guy just really wanted to see London and used Catfish to do so.

reply

That was horrible of her.

reply

It was hard to watch.

reply

Absolutely! But I also think he is dangerous, he has class A. Obsessive, delusional behavior issues. He truly creeped me out and I don't get winged easily. Red flags! Remember Rebecca Schaeffer? Yeah the guy is still in prison, still talking about her like 30 years later...

reply

Dangerously disturbed, pathetic man
Glad I don't know him.
Or ... this is scripted and the guy's a decent actor (as others have said)

reply

Yes! Please be an actor, Spencer. Please be an actor. The alternative is all kinds of horrible.
