I can't believe I haven't heard of this until just now, instead of when it started coming out in 2012. Woops. heheh. yup, been hiding under a rock, I guess.
I watched Star Blazers back in the late 70s or early 80s when it was shown on WGN. Guess when I first heard of this version?

They are doing the remake of season 2 right now as Yamato 2202 Soldiers of love .. its suposed to release next year
As for remaking season 3 .. its a total mystery as today.. depends largelly on how Yamato 2202 works and the authors intentions.. previously while doing 2199 (remake of season 1) they said they werent much interested in remaking season 2 ..but in doing a short of prequel to tell the "interplanetary wars" between Earth and some Mars faction.. and the start of the Gamillas invasion at least up to the battle of Mars
then now they ignore that prequel and go straight with remake of season 2...
so if they DONT follow close the original soldiers of love where about everyone died and Yamato was destroyed, a remake of season 3 (the Bolar wars) is more likelly (as they have allready introduced in 2199 characters from Yamato 3)
I heard about it when it was in preproduction because of a couple of other versions that had come out, including one regarding the crews descendants. However, given the wonkiness of that film, I thought 2199 might be a "Dirty Pair Flash" version of the original series, so I didn't buy any of the disks when the series hit the market.
I'm sorry I didn't, but am glad to have them now, and am thoroughly enjoying a very fine update of a series that, as a kid, I had some reservations about but still enjoyed all the same.
I can't wait to see the Comet Empire series
