Good acting and good directing. But it's a bad movie. I'll tell you why.

Because it commits the one, main deadly sin that destroys a movie. It's boring.
You could have William Hurt, Sam Rockwell and Philip Seymour Hoffman directed by Scorsese, it wouldn't matter one damn bit when the movie is boring.
Yes, I know it's a "slow buildup" but it's BORING. And it didn't have to be. Lots of good movies have "slow buildups" or are generally slow, but they are still good.

And here comes the bit that's going to pull everybody's panties into a collective twist:
I turned it off after about one hour. Because it was boring.
I like art films, I admire the works of Von Trier, Malick and Wes Anderson. I do not demand constant action. I demand not boring.

reply

So you didn't even watched the whole thing , yet you're here saying that the movie is boring .

I guess you should've AT LEAST watch the entire movie before affirming anything

So going to the movies is like going to prison for you? You want to go to prison to take it up the behind by a guy called Bubba? :P

If you were in prison and some guy named Bubba was *beep* you in the a**, would you wait until he was all done before you decided whether you liked it or not?

You never know, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Bubba seems to get around. Every time someone talkes about prison rape, its some dude called bubba.

So there you have it. If you ever get sent to prison and some guy called buba introduces himself, lube yourself up and practice talking talk dirty so he finishes quicker.

Probably not, but in that case, I don't think I'd jump on the internet to tell people how I felt about it, either. "His hands were soft and he smelled nice, but it was a bad experience. Let me tell you all why..."

reply

OK, you make a good point.

"Whatever happened to Fay Wray?"

reply

Yeah, because watching a movie and getting raped in prison are in the same context.
Poor comparison to prove a point.
But who cares about points these days, as long as you get a laugh, right?

He is 100% correct. I am watching it and feel like a whole lot of time could have been saved by tightening up the scenes. Everyone moves like they are sedated! Nice time killer and all the actors are good to see together but whoo boy what a bore.

reply

I loved every single second of it. I wasn't bored once. The characters were so likeable and interesting, and the script so phenomenally good, that it was a joy to listen to them ramble about totally random stuff. Then, when the *beep* hit the fan, holy *beep* The last 30 minutes were disturbing and outright disgusting, you totally missed out! But, to each their own! :)

reply

I agree. The OP must be a troll, because there was nothing boring about this movie by any measure. Even though it builds up slowly towards the gruesome finale, there is enough tension and intermittent action up to that point to keep those among the audience interested who absolutely hate dialogue and character development.

reply

i agree, the OP is definetly a troll. The movie was awesome. I had no expectations when I started watching it. Then 5 minutes into it i was so hooked. Damn good movie. Damn good actors, except the girl...she seemed out of her depth and too bland

reply

sure, he's got to be a troll, because how could there be a person on this planet that has different opinion on what is/not boring from yours?

reply

I thought the acting and directing were kind of weak at times. The cinematography was done by some guy who did the same for a bunch of those Tae Bo workout videos... The best thing about the film was the script. I think it can still stand alongside a number of atypical westerns but it ain't no Coen brothers film. And it ain't no Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, but it's better than The Missing, Blueberry, Sweetwater etc.

6.71/10

reply

Definitely no Coens production or Assassination of Jesse James, but considering it was made with a budget they would have probably spent on catering and a fraction of even the other films you mentioned, it is quite an accomplishment. No cgi. No crazy lens filters. Just great actors with a great script and killer location.

you gave 6,71?? i gave 9,966785415611

reply

This is better than anything the Cohen Brothers have done in the last 20 years. And the Assassination of Jesse James is one of the worst movies of the 2000s. I absolutely hate that movie.

reply

6.71/10

No way. This is closer to a 6.73/10, maybe even 6.73½.

So do I, but I never need to mention it in order to criticise a film I don't like.

Liking those particular filmmakers doesn't mean you're the grandmaster of watching "slow" movies or something.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

reply

Hah! This is so true.
I guess he was just trying to point out that he's not averse to slower movies in general.
Still, he could've just said "I'm not averse to slower movies in general"
I really wanna see this movie though. Is it good guys?

reply

"he could've just said "I'm not averse to slower movies in general"
Yes I could, but english is not my mother tounge. I'll remember that phrase flix. ;-)

reply

"the grandmaster of watching "slow" movies"
Never said i was Jake. I just tried to make a point of me not being averse to slow movies.
Slow never have to equal boring.

reply

it doesn't bother me that you found this movie boring.

however, i did not find it boring.

reply

I did find most of the first half rather boring, probably because it's not gonna keep you immersed on a smaller tv with not the best sound possibly.

But it all tied together nicely. The journey needed to be long to emphasize the length of trip..

reply

Yes, real slow start... but thats the beauty of the anticaption of a great ending. Commenting on a movie that wasn't completed is short changing the actors, the director, and yourself.
Hitchcock was a master of the slow build up. He could sit you down and then wind you up. I was glad I watched it to the end. It was worth watching, even though it was one of the most bizarre movies I've seen in a while.
I would certainly give it another shot.
The music is kind of weird too.

reply

Part of the slowness is to give us a really good feel for the characters. People are impatient now. They just want to switch their brain off and be entertained. I'm watching it just now. Haven't reached the end yet so I'm a bit worried about this 'last 30 minutes' everyone is talking about. I don't like brutality in films so I guess I'm going to squirm a bit.
Great character actors with a great script. (So far at least).

reply

Actually I think the directing is the weakest part.

IMHO the cave scene would have worked better with a more experienced director. It came off a bit hokey to me.

reply

So far I am about 45 mins into it and it's been a complete snooze fest. I hope it get's better because based on what I'm watching, this didn't even need to be a western at all. The actors are not portraying their characters properly and it feels forced at times.

I get no 'western feel' from this film at all. It's like it's just fluff for the sake of having it be based on those times if that makes sense. I hope it get's better...

reply

Oh yeah? I can only imagine the cave scene as directed by Terrence Malick. The troglodytes would've just bored Kurt Russell and company to death at the end.
