David Simon pulls me in every time

I just finished watching Show me a hero. David Simon has the remarkable ability to draw you into the very essence of a the setting of his productions. In the wire, treme, and now show me a hero, I felt like I was could breathe, taste, and lived in Baltimore, New Orleans, and now Yonkers New York. I cannot wait until the next journey he takes me on.

Welcome to my world. Jk.

It looks like his next project is called "The Deuce" and will center around the porno and drug scene in 1970s era Times Square in New York City.

reply

That sounds good. Love NYC in the 70's, warts and all.

Don't forget about Iraq too with Generation Kill. Simon is probably my favorite TV showrunner for what you stated. He also makes human drama compelling without the need for gratuitous violence and overused tropes.

Just finished watching this as well, and it was terrific. Are Generation Kill and The Corner as good as this or The Wire?

reply

The corner is a prelude to the wire, and yes it is good as well. I have not watched Generation Kill, but I plan to watch it in a marathon viewing on hbo demand.

Generation Kill is outstanding. I wasn't a fan of the actor who played Ziggy... until I saw him in Generation Kill. He's incredible.

"Show me a Hero " was a very touching example of how government can make a difference in people's lives. The story of what occurred in Yonkers symbolizes that American will always do the right thing in the end. David Simon's series based on the book by Lisa Belkin was a truly inspiring piece. Reminiscent in many ways to the work done in the early 20th Century by journalists who shaped policies through their collective exposed known as "muckrakers" . I would regard Simon as a true muckraker of our times.
