I just finished watching the UK version (I binge-watched the UK version after watching the Canadian version). It's pretty similar except the Canadian version moves at a slightly quicker/more interesting pace where as the UK version tends to draw out certain scenes and conversations. A few more observations:
- The sons from both versions are spot on, very similar in looks, acting and tone, I was very impressed!
- Both Joanna Lumley and Kim Cattrell did great jobs, I'm not too familiar with Lumley's work but she did the role justice, as did Kim.
- The drug dealer in season 1 had a slightly bigger role in the Canadian version, one being that you actually see him where as in the UK version, from what I remember, he was only talked about.
- Adam Rayner (who played Greg, the young lover in the UK version) was SO gorgeous; in the Canadian version they use a french guy from Montreal

The Canadian version only has one season so far, hoping HBO will fund the second season.

If you're not familiar with Lumley's work, go back and watch the old UK comedy "Absolutely Fabulous." She's done a ton of other great work, but AbFab is pure genius.

Movies are IQ tests; the IMDB boards are how people broadcast their score.

Well bluemilk, yes and no.

It is something like the original in that it uses the same scripts.

That's where the similarity ends.

The lovely Kim Cattrall can not even begin to fill the shoes of Joanna Lumley. As Davina, Kim falls short of the mark. Where Lumley brought an earthiness and a raw reality to the role, Cattrall brings all the gravitas of an episode of Desperate Housewives.

It's sad because Kim would be lovely in the right vehicle, but this is not it. She is entirely out of her depth and every episode bears this out. And it's not just her. Don McKellar in the Denis Lawson role also suffers in comparison. McKellar is an unfunny clown trying too hard, whereas Lawson actually understands how to underplay comedy.

The camerawork tries very hard to do what all tv shows and movies made in Toronto try to do. To make Toronto come across as a "world class city". Stupid concept, but as we know Canadians have an identity crisis. Toronto is not London. Just let it be what it is.

I would give this version a pass.

they really didn't grasp the melancholy beauty of the original. the slow pace and the subtle humour of the orginal is what made it so unique and touching.
