Just rewatched Enders Game and it struck me..Remember before there were any trailers to TFA there were fan trailers using shots from Enders Game with Ford and he's all clean cut, in the cool futuristic uniform..

Han could've been a clean cut General in charge of the fleet (like Adama in BSG) in a cool looking uniform (instead of going back to being a lowly smuggler)

Luke could've been an all powerful Jedi master in the new Jedi council (instead of a hermit)

Leia could've been like queen of the galaxy (not a general)

Ben Solo - Conflicted but not yet turned to the dark side by Snoke

Rey could've been a young apprentice jedi of Lukes academy

Poe/Finn just the same (xwing pilot/stormtrooper)

Quick plot synopsis: 30 years on from the defeat of the Empire, the New Republic is thriving when a familiar sinister evil lurks in the shadows (a phantom menace). As The First Order slowly rises, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and Queen Leia must once again enlist the help of General Han Solo to defeat this new unforeseen enemy that threatens to destroy the peace and justice in the galaxy(abit like ROTS but the first movie not the last).. Solo would die at the end sacrificing himself in the Falcon so the new cast could get away (like Laura Dern in Ep8).

Basically Ep7 could've been more like the prequels! (as opposed to the OT like TFA was) with plenty Han/Luke/Leia interacting scenes. then Ep8 could've been set about 10y later (like AOTC) after the downfall of the New Republic/dominance of the First Order (so like the TFA/TLJ with luke missing/leia a general/luke dies Gladiator/Maximus style etc) .

Or maybe that too close to the Zahn sequel novels?

No, I don't think so. Maybe I'm not remembering the Zahn books clearly enough, but your story seems like a fresh idea.

I like, but it still feels like a retread of the OT , how about Darth Plageius was never actually dead but in a state of hibernation slowly bringing himself back to life after all these years, he sends out agents of the dark side to kidnap Lukes new jedi academy to feed off there force to full bring him back to full health and power, Luke and the rest of the heroes including new heroes of his jedi academy, must fight and save the day, remember what palpatine said in rots, so powerful he could bring people back to life, including himself

By the time JJ retcons...sorry... "corrects the course"...of the story...snoke will be Plageius.

Ironically id have Ep9 play out pretty much as it happened in TROS with the Emperor returning etc

thinking about it that IS the back story of TFA, like in the 20years or so after Return of the Jedi thats how it panned out (except Solo probably bailed out of General responsibilities not too long after) its just they waited too long to do the sequel (30years!) so by then Ben Solo would've already have been turned by Snoke/Palpatine in his late teens (as in TLJ flashback). Theyd have had to do the sequels about 20y after Jedi for that (when Ford/Hamill/Fisher were still 60s/50s instead of 70s/60s) but that would've meant GLucas wouldve had to do the sequel trilogy instead of the prequels and he wasn't going to that

But anyway they probably weren't too keen on it being similar to the prequels/TPM as opposed to being almost a retred of the iconic original ANH. However there could've been a flashback scene to that era with cgi deaged Ford/Fisher/Hamill (but then the tech wasn't really there back in 2014/15 - see Rogue 1)
