Jennette's Comment about the Cancellation

From Facebook. -

"Unfortunately, a personal reddit post and the subsequent taken-out-of-context comments have led people/media to believe S&C was cancelled due to the photos that leaked back in March (after some stuff I said on the ever-awesome Pete Holmes podcast).

Rest assured, fans and pitiful haters alike, this is not the case.

Sam & Cat was not cancelled due to any risqué photos. In fact, Nickelodeon responded to me as soon as the incident happened, and on that particular occasion, I felt supported by a network I gave eight years of my life to.

The reason Sam & Cat ended was because of adults being stuffed into cookie cutter kids' network characters created for tweens.

This is as official of a post as I am going to give. Everything quoted before this very post was purely my response to ignorant social network commenters. That's all. 💁

So why was S&C cancelled? Because she never addressed that. When the show first started people knew Jennette and Ariana were pushing the age limit. Heck I joked about there only being a single season from the beginning. I and others never thought the show would continue, never wanted it to continue, and were actually annoyed when Nick hinted it might. Except S&C didn't just end. It was cancelled with four episodes left in the production order and Jennette's post fails to explain that.

reply

So basically she sabotaged the show (not necessarily out of malice) because she was sick of being Sam and typecast as a kids' character.

*Nyan Cat, LGBT Rainbow of Infinity!

reply

Not sabotaged but because Grande was getting all the fame.

reply

That is not an explanation. That's also not the only thing Jennette put out there. Seven days after S&C got cancelled, Jennette finally put this out and it seems like a nameless inside source might have been right about what Jennette meant about feeling disrespected by Nick and what she was told. Someone on twitter posted a link that is no longer available where a source claimed that Nick execs called a meeting with Jennette and Dan Schneider. At this meeting, Nick practically accused Jennette of being careless about the pictures and if she didn't realize that many kids see her as a role model. Jennette was said to have also fought back by saying that she didn't see herself as a role model and that no one should be seeing her as one. Lots of harsh things were exchanged and it was not said what more was discussed. Schneider was mainly there acting like a piece keeper between the two. Jennette was said to have left the meeting feeling betrayed and disrespected. she mentioned being disrespected right after the KCAs aired.

Anyway here is the "rant" she put out Thursday via reddit:

"I am not a role model. I don't claim to be, I don't try to be, and I don't want to be. There was a time when I tried to live up to the aggrandizing title, that pedestal of a thing. Maybe it wasn't so much that I was trying to live up to it," she wrote. "Perhaps I thought I could and I thought I was supposed to, so I gave it my best shot."

"Back in my adolescence, I was more amiable, bubbly, and on lightly humid days, maybe even flouncy," the 22-year-old vented. "I was role model material and then some."

"I might not be any wiser," she admitted, "but I like to think I'm more honest."

"With the growing I've done, I realize that to attempt to live up to the idea of being a role model is to set myself up for foregone failure. Sure, I've made some mistakes, but even if I hadn't, people would have found invisible ones. This world is one seemingly most keen on judgment and negativity, despite all the hearts and smiley emoticons," McCurdy said. "To remove myself from the role model battle, the falsified standard set by the bubblegum industry, is - in my eyes - to remove myself from the counterintuitive battle of attempting to be something perfect while being glaringly aware of my imperfections."

"I still love a cute dress, a good pop song, and a vanilla-scented candle," the Long Beach, Calif., native explained. "But these things don't define me or determine that I am any kind of a role model. What defines a person as a role model is the way they live their life. And no offense, but none of you know how I live my life."

"Now before you start thinking I'm some sort of derelict that leads a life of crime, let me clarify. I am proud of the way I live my life. I am proud of my choices. I am proud that no one can call me fake or say I don't stand up for myself. I am proud that my friends and family would say that I'm a good person," McCurdy wrote. "But in order to be thought of as a real, true role model, I believe you have to know a person and their actions, inside and out."

"Calling a celebrity a role model is like calling a stranger a role model. The knowledge you have of a celebrity is no more than a caricature drawn by media tastemakers specializing in selling you an image you're dying to buy. It's good to have heroes, but you have to look for them in the right places," she wrote. "They say don't look for true love in a bar, well I say, don't look for role models on screens."

"For those of you who do consider me a role model, I hope you don't read this and cringe. I appreciate you. I appreciate you so much! I appreciate that you believe in me, support me, and in some way, hope to live your life like me," the "Generation Love" singer wrote in her conclusion. "But please, I encourage you to find role models in the people around you, the people in your everyday life, the people that are your friends and family," McCurdy pleaded. "I encourage you to base your idea of a role model off of someone you know well enough to see purely, not in the light, cameras, and actions of Hollywood."

That's it. Some time after that she put up a selfie of herself wearing underwear and braless. No there was no nudity, she was wearing a tiny top. She captioned it with the hashtags...."#nofilter #datass #fapfapfap #eww #boysaregross."

Really Jennette fapfapfap? Yep you really don't want to be a role model.

reply

So basically what I'm hearing is that she was sick of being held to impossible standards.

"Weird is just a side effect of being awesome."

reply

No she was sick of being held to very reasonable standards. Other stars of kids shows have no problems with similar clauses in their contracts, she is pretty much alone in supposedly not being able to control herself.

reply

So what clause of her contract did she violate?

reply

Most likely all of them.

"Weird is just a side effect of being awesome."

reply

In other words you don't know.

reply

I agree to an extent, but I don't think it's fair to the stars to ask them to lie to the fans and pretend to be something they're not and setting them up to fail.

"Weird is just a side effect of being awesome."

reply

I'm confused. Nickelodeon stated to the press that the photos caused no issues between them and Jennette. Jennette also stated the night of the KCA's that this drama has NOTHING to do with the photos, but how Nickelodeon treated her.

So she's mad because Nickelodeon disrespected her at a meeting about the photos that turned into a full blown argument?

If the photos caused no issues between Nick and Jennette, then why would they call a meeting?

reply

Because it is the photos but she probably counter blackmailed Nick.

reply

If the photos caused no issues between Nick and Jennette, then why would they call a meeting?

Because it's not about the pics that were leaked in March. It's all about the risque photos she had been posting herself going back a full year before that. She had already been warned several times she was violating her contract.

Such a liar she is.

reply

I love that she remains defiant. Such a breath of fresh air from the industry.

"The reason Sam & Cat ended was because of adults being stuffed into cookie cutter kids' network characters created for tweens."

So basically she's saying that she and/or Ariana wanted to do more mature roles? I find that highly unlikely as the reason the show was cancelled. But I guess anything is possible.

I think the cancellation was caused by Ariana's music career. Perhaps she felt the kids show didn't fit in with her new pop star image, in which case Jennette is correct. She knows more about it than I so I guess I should trust her.

reply

That tweet seems so white washed it's pathetic. Obviously she's masking over what she really felt.

reply

It was cancelled because it was receiving poor ratings, which is the reason that most shows get cancelled.

Aside from Victorious, which never had bad ratings, but was cancelled, anyway, because Ariana Grande wanted to have her own show.

Good to see that Vic is still getting good roles, though - the lead in two upcoming movies and her own TV show. I just wish that she was able to record her debut album and release it, because I really want to hear what Vic has compiled. I'm sure it'd be amazing.

reply

Victorious was NOT cancelled because Ariana wanted to have her own show. You really should have known that Sam and Cat was a vehicle for Jennette and SHE asked Ariana to join the show. That is when Nick changed the concept that if I remember correctly goes parallel with Victorious with Cat going to Hollywood Arts.

reply

I haven't been following Nick as closely since iCarly ended, but I very, very highly doubt that Jennette McCurdy asked someone else to co-star on her show. That doesn't sound like something she'd do in a million years. Do you have any concrete sources for that?

I mean, hey, if it's for real then I'll concede and say I'm sorry. But that sounds like the same kind of two-bit network PR that the suits would make up. Definitely doesn't sound like anything we know about Jennette or Ariana as real life people. How convenient it'd be if Jennette happened to ask for Nick's biggest star to steal the spotlight away from her. She's brash but she's not dumb.

reply

My point* was that it NEVER was the fault of Ariana (or any of the cast members) that Victorious were cancelled. While Nick never gave an official reason why it truly was cancelled, the most likely reason that it was cancelled by Nick, was because of the declining ratings, costs, not bringing in enough profits from music/merchandise and all.

As far I can remember, Jennette and Ariana said (in an interview or something) that after they began to be friends in 2010 they wanted to do a show together. That was way before Sam and Cat came to be. Not the suits. At the time that Sam and Cat were though up Ariana was not the biggest star of Nick yet. If you know what I mean.

PS: I will look into this further.

* That I seem to have removed from previous post by accident. Ooops.

The show did fine in the ratings and was even renewed for a second season before this whole issue happened so what the hell are you talking about?

Low 3 million (and even less, except for one special to hit nearly 5 million) in the ratings is fine to you? After iCarly and Victorious episodes which used to hit 4 million and above? I don't think so.

I honestly think this show got cancelled in mid to late February,so talks of a supposed "second season" sound ridiculous. This http://img.4plebs.org/boards/tv/image/1405/30/1405307252034.jpg tweet from VJ's former manager helps, especially since Jennette's pics came out in March. Some of Jennette's vines used to take place in her dressing room at NOS and after February they stopped. We'll never truly know. But oh well. In my opinion,it wasn't a great show and it won't be missed like iCarly.

reply

The show ended in late March after Jennette walked off the set and never came back. The Kids Choice Awards fiasco was the last straw, as Nick chose to give an award to Ariana even though Jennette had gotten more votes, but it was more than that. Two days before the awards there was a closed door meeting between Jennette, Dan Schneider and Nick executives where there was a lot of shouting and crying, after which she stormed off and vowed never to return until her demands were met. At that point only 36 episodes had been finished with 4 more left to be done, and production suddenly came to a halt. After a few weeks it was realized that there was going to be no compromise so Jennette began working on her "What's Next For Sarah?" show as her own way to tell her side of the story. Nobody is saying what was said in that private meeting, though it is likely that is when she found out about the KCA decision, but nothing is known if there was more to cause her leave such as photo scandals, pay raises, etc.

Thank-you for your insights nedave99. It seems that you have some insider information. We know that Jeanette's photographs were not the problem, because she has said that Nickelodeon was supportive when they leaked. Ratings were not the issue either, because while they weren't fantastic, they were decent enough that Nickelodeon would have made money off advertisers who would pay extra because a growing international pop star was on the show.

Your account of the situation seems consistent with what Ariana Grande told a fan via tweet a few months ago. When the fan asked what was going on with "Sam and Cat", Ariana said something like she couldn't explain because, "I am not directly involved with the problem".

And as drawsdakcab alluded to in their reply, if I am interpreting it correctly, Ariana wasn't anywhere to be found near this situation.

reply

Which remains, for me, the one thing I don't understand. Ariana, one of the co-leads, didn't know what was going on. Whatever happened caused enough of a disruption to not only end the show but end it early. Sure giving Jennette's award to Ariana would be in poor taste but that hardly warrants a closed door meeting. Jennette was with Nickelodeon long enough to know the KCAs are rigged. At the same time the it is the most concrete reason I have. Assuming Jennette should have won.

The other option the show was in the process of being renewed. The rating were certainly good enough. Except when would they have filmed it? Ariana's music career is huge right now so realistically the filming schedule would have to accommodate it. Which would make it difficult for the rest of the cast to pursue other jobs. Especially Jennette.

reply

That actually happened. Ariana missed an entire week of shooting back in January and left the cast and crew hanging, they had to rewrite the script around her and shoot her scenes when she returned. Part of the rumors out there are that Jennette was upset that she was getting reprimanded for minor tardiness occasions while Ariana missed a whole week yet was given the award. Also out there is that Ariana was supposedly lying about not getting a raise. I can't prove any of that though (but I can prove the missed week).

reply

Kept the crew/cast hanging? I really don't want to rain on your parade, but there's a larger chance that they knew and talked about it with Ariana and THEREFORE rewritten the script to let her work on her album, etc. You just cannot do two things at the same time. If you know what I mean.

Sometimes are rumors just rumors.

reply

Of course Nick new Ariana would be gone for a week. They likely knew she'd have to miss additional weeks if the show continued. How many and how often I don't know, but she did have a leading role.

What isn't known is how often both Jennette and Ariana were simply late or missed a day. And while Ariana's music gave her a better reason the effect on the crew for either's absence was the same. Given Jennette's earlier behavior I can entirely believe she'd show up late just to make a point.

reply

drawsdakcab,

I believe that Ariana and the principle cast members know exactly what caused the end of the show. Jeanette strikes me as the type of person who not only stands up for herself, but make her grievances known.

Based on Ariana's responses, it seems she was trying to communicate that she was not directly related to the drama going on and was not at liberty to say what was. I'm sure the cast and crew are bound to some confidentiality agreements.

Only the insiders know what really happened, but it's safe to conclude Jeanette felt mistreated by Nickelodeon. This is pure speculation, but maybe Nickelodeon was willing to work with Ariana during the new contract talks and give her special privileges to accommodate her rising music career, and Jeanette felt it was unfair, given her loyalty to the network. I still don't think money was the issue (Ariana was adamant about that), nor a KCA award.

Jeanette saw a situation brewing (helped along by Nickelodeon) where she would no longer be on equal footing with her co-lead, professionally and artistically, and she wasn't going to have it. The situation has to do with Jeanette's relationship with Nickelodeon, with Ariana being an indirect byproduct.

solidarity - unity or agreement of feeling or action, especially among individuals with a common interest; mutual support within a group.

If Ariana's success lead to her getting preferential treatment from Nickelodeon she should have gotten involved.

reply

If Ariana's success lead to her getting preferential treatment from Nickelodeon she should have gotten involved.

Not necessarily. If the nature of the relationship between Ariana and Jeanette had already deteriorated, then it is understandable that Ariana would not get involved. Solidarity would not have been an option when their long term goals were not to stay on the show and trust may have been broken.

Ariana did release a statement saying that she and Jeanette worked equally hard and agreed on fair treatment in salary and contracts on the show from the start, and rumors disputing that were not true. I believe that.

However, perception is reality, and if Jeanette believed that Ariana was getting preferential treatment in another area, combined with the fact she has a problem with Ariana on a personal level, then a volatile situation was already in place. Ariana also made a statement thanking Nickelodeon for being very accommodating with her music career. Maybe Nickelodeon was not as accommodating with Jeanette's other, possibly more mature projects, and gave her a hard time. We don't know. Either way, it would not be Ariana's place to interfere with those conversations.

They are both adults, and neither one had an obligation to the other in terms of their dealings with Nickelodeon. Both were moving in different directions career wise, and each one needed to make the best decision for herself.

You brought up a valid point from earlier: Even with all of this going on, there had to be something significant that would completely stop production of a successful show. Networks deal with temperamental stars all the time. What was the catalyst?

reply

I'm just curious about what Ariana cares about. As far as I can tell the only thing that interests her is fame which, in my opinion, is unfortunate.

Wow, I can't believe that no one has posted the last thing Jennette stated about why the show was canceled. I can't remember the words exactly and you can look it up online, just look for it. But Jennette came out and stated that reason why the show was cancelled was basically because things just got too much for her.

No it wasn't a feud with Ariana and it wasn't the racy pics or salary disputes. The photos played a little in but it was mostly taking its toll on Jennette from within. When her mom died it also messed her up a little more inside. Instead of grieving she went right back to work 6 days after her mom passed away. she tried to keep it bottled up but it effected her. So her mom's death along with other things effecting her screwed her up. she stated "I felt like it would've done so much if somebody would've just f--king - sorry," McCurdy told Vulture. "It would've done so much if somebody would've just given me a hug. And I hope that that's something I can take with myself and acknowledge when somebody else is having a really hard time, that sometimes it's like, give a person a break, you know?"

So I'm only guessing that Nick only gave her 6 days to mourn and that she probably requested some more time off and Nick refused. Not only that but a source on the set said that tensions were high between many people. It was something like you work with these people every day and night and you never take a break away from them. they are not you're true friends or you're family. sometimes you just need to get away. Only just when it seemed like a break was coming, Nick kept pushing more episodes on the cast and crew and this kept causing tensions among everyone. So Jennette had enough and walked.
