I read an article that it was not based on a true story.

I doubt it's based on a real life story. The parents are absolutely CLUELESS as to what this young woman needs, psychologically. Prematurely getting a dog, or falling backwards to establish trust. They should have entered her world gradually to deprogram the *beep* her captor shovelled. And the fact there was no "real" therapy involved for the family ... not real.

I don't think it's based on any single story. It's common for victims of kidnap (especially for so long) to feel out of their bubble when they finally return home.
