Cringe worthiness cranked up to eleven

I hope this movie disappears without a trace at the box office. Being Scottish myself, and an ex-Scottish soldier, it just looks so bad. In contrast, anticipation is very high for the movie rendition of Irvine Welsh's 'Filth'.

Well, the stage version was excellent - actually had a plot line and moments of real drama - but I'm beginning to worry that they've jollyied it up a bit too much. Let's hope not.

reply

Of course I hope I'm wrong, have no intention to see this, but it just looks so cheesy.

reply

It's embarrassing to watch. Especially if I were watching it with someone who was not from Scotland.

reply

Anyone who enjoyed "Mamma Mia" and "Gregory's Girl" will enjoy it. Hard men with no feelings won't. It's a sweet film, not without flaws, but enjoyable, nevertheless. Probably not your bag.

reply

I hated both of those films.
I hate musicals but my better half dragged me to a preview with a Q&A with Dexter Fletcher after.
Must admit - yes, as with any musical, there are some incredibly broad strokes - but its heart is in the right place and it is extremely well executed.
Didn't come out with a tear in my eye, but I lost some man points by feeling rather uplifted by the whole affair.

Go in with the lowest expectations.

reply

I hail originally from Edinburgh, dislike the Proclaimers, my late Dad had an Army background, not a big fan of musicals (half-liked a couple of the oldies)and not exactly fired up to watch this, from watching the trailers. Going in with low (VERY)expectations might be the right approach. Prefer the feebler option of waiting until the dvd comes out next Feb maybe. (Big maybe so far).
Hopefully FILTH might be a better option?

 so only little girls who like jukebox musicals will enjoy it?

Irvine Welsh is a talentless fake ,I have no interest in seeing a film of his work.

reply

Thousands will differ.

reply

Yeah, thousands decided to take up smack after reading TRAINSPOTTING,but you know that Irvine only wrote about those people,he was not actually one of them.

reply

Didn't guess for a mom IW was one of them!
Trainspotting certainly got Ewan Macgregor up there with the A-listers all the same, didn't it?
And writers like IW and Ian Rankin, and the unforgettable Dame Muriel Spark have helped to further Edinburgh's excellent profile internationally, city of Hume and Boswell.
Such a talented citizenry - uneasy lies the head that wears the crown!

reply

I really enjoyed it. Yes, it's corny as hell and could have done with better character development but all in all it was well done. The last five minutes were especially good - the "I'm Gonna Be'(500 miles)" finale was a lot of fun to watch and quite moving, too, thanks to some marvellous vocals and the other aspects of the reinvention of the song. I may even buy the soundtrack. A really charming film.

reply

And am I right that this thread was started by some joyless, dour Scot who hadn't seen it? I loved it.

reply

You went to the bother of commenting on a film you probably have no intention of going to see???
Let me guess, you don't like the Proclaimers & you don't like musicals????
For the record, I went to see it in the South east of England with an English person who admitted afterwards, she thought it would be toe curling, but thought it was amazing!!

I can't help but admire someone who can come out publicly to condemn something that they have no knowledge of, and suggest a viable alternative (which is clearly better) despite having no knowledge of that either.

Fantastic.

Perhaps you could discredit a few restaurants that you have never been to as well, so I can give them a wide berth.

reply

I just saw this last night and totally enjoyed it. Haven't seen Filth but have heard that it's not been as well received as expectations had hoped for. Horses for Courses I suppose, but I'm definitely going to take in the theatre version of "Sunshine On Leith" as soon as I can with a bunch of pals. BTW I'm a Fifer so that may play a part in it, can't say I've ever been a die hard Proclaimers Fan but always dial up the volume whenever I hear a track playing on the Radio.

reply

I cringed in the opening scene when they started singing lol but I just thought it was a weird intro gone wrong, but then they sung again and it kinda dawned on me it was going to be a musical, but I waited it out and then they started back at it in the pub with the girl stood on table and I had to turn it off =(

tbh i didnt read what the film entailed or that it was a musical, I just saw Dexters name and presumed it would be my kinda thing, gutted lol oh well
