This series is just a take on the book "I am Legend." Yes, in the book there were intelligent zombie/vampires and "rabid" zombie/vampires. It's just that no movie based on the book decided to show that aspect of the book.

This series seems so unique because it was the first to show those two types of zombies. Even in the book, the intelligent zombie/vampires were afraid of humans because of how violent they were towards the dead. In fact, it was the intelligent zombie/vampires who named the main human the "legend" because his brutality towards the innocent zombie/vampires was "legendary." Every-other US TV movie or show on zombies avoids that angle because it's too complex for US consumers to understand.

You'd figure with all the movies based off of "I Am Legend," Hollywood would finally show the type of zombie/vampires that are the main plot point of "In the Flesh." But nope! They dropped the ball and now the Brits figured it out.

The Omega Man is based on I Am Legend and features intelligent vampire like humans.
