Possible Plot Hole?: Kieran Can't Be The 1st Riser!

Because there were others already out of their graves walking about by the time he lifted the lid of his coffin. (Season 1, Episode 2)

What he said in the latest episode could just be him mis-remembering things? (About him being the only one out of the grave at the time.)

I'd prefer Kieran not being the first riser since that would be way to cliche!

reply

I thought that too, so I skipped through the 2nd episode to find it. At 15 minutes in he pops his head out of his grave and you possibly hear a bell toll once (like he was saying about the bell tolling midnight or w/e) but there are loads of others around him, he isn't alone. Is he mis-remembering, lying, or is it just convenient for the producers to change the story-line?

reply

I'm leaning towards plot hole convenience. Although I didn't really expect it from a BBC show that only in their second season!

It could be that the others around him weren't from Roarton and were just passing by that time and the prophecy means for the first Roarton riser? In which case, this would be Kieran since I didn't see anyone else coming out from their graves, apart from Amy but she came out later than Kieran?

reply

Roarton is also supposed to be the first location where the dead rose up. So the first riser there is - purportedly - the first riser of the entire rising.

If Kieran is the first riser I expect this will be retconned. But... I still think Amy is the first, or at least the one to have whatever special properties that makes her so valuable to various players.

reply

Perhaps they escaped their coffins faster than him, he could have still been the first one to rise.

reply

Kieren suggests that he was out of his grave first, because he says 'And you're standing there, nobody else around'. Simon then asks if any of the other graves were open and Kieren says 'No the other graves were fine'. And it wouldn't make sense that the undead had popped up elsewhere and were just making their way through Roarton when Kieren rose, because Roarton is purported to be where it all started. They're always talking about how it all started in Roarton and the first risers were in Roarton.

(sorry about this copy & paste)....

in ep.5 Amy starts to feel the rain on her face which apparently is unheard of for any returned. i think maybe Amy (or her DNA) is a cure for the zombies. Maxine probably has been searching for the first risen because she knows or suspects the first risen could have a cure. the extremist group/leader guy probably wants the first dead because he/they don't want a cure.

right now my money is on Amy. why else would they not show who the B&B lady pointed to and why would they have that important scene where Amy starts to feel physical

I actually took that as Amy is returning to a human. I've got another theory that because she's becoming human she's got the chance of getting pregnant so she may give birth to a human-zombie mutant baby like a messed up version of Virgin Mary or something! Lol!

reply

Scarlet, why couldn't she have been returning to living (not human. even partially deceased, she was still technically human)?

1. she felt the rain
2. color was returning to her skin
3. she could eat
4. she felt the cold
5. her heart was beating
6. she was bleeding (BLEEDING. not that black crap. BLOOD)
7. her eyes were brown (she did not have her contacts in. she was au naturel)

to me, all signs point to SHE WAS COMING BACK TO LIFE! I MEAN SERIOUSLY! was I the ONLY one watching?!

reply

Um you need to read what I wrote again. I said that she WAS returning to human. I was replying to a user who didn't believe it.

reply

you said you took it as her returning to human, like you're not really sure. that's how I took it, so that's why I said that.

reply

I'm thinking that they are going to do the old, "we miss interpreted the prophesy" thing, and all of the PSD folks are going to start to pass back into the living. The first risen is Amy, and the second rising is the second chance at being truly alive. This would fit with the first must die, because Amy did die just as she came to life. What do you think?

I'll be in my bunk.

reply

I'd heard the same thing about the second rising meaning that they were going back to being living, breathing humans, but I like your interpretation of it better.

reply

djblack1313, just no. Kieren is showing the same symptoms. his hand started trembling. Amy is not the cure.

reply

I came here to be all like "Yo, dude didn't you watch the last episode?!" But then realized, based upon your post date, that no, you hadn't.

reply

It makes sense andni was certain as well..now that he is on the hit list so the 2nd rising can happen it will be discovered I suppose,, esp since his new love is suppose to kill him..

reply

I am under the impression that the show started as a mini series, but because it was so successful, they decided to extend it... Therefore, I conclude that it is indeed a plot hole, since the plot must have been way more simple to begin with, and then they had to make it more intricate for the second season... I imagine that's where the second rebirth and all the deal with the first riser started...

reply

Bad writing indeed. And it shows that the writers don't take seriously what they have written before. So the idea is not to create a reality but instead merely entertainment. The show would have deserved something better.

reply

Considering how the season ended, I don't think Kieren was the first risen anyway.

reply

I agree, I don't think it was Kieren either. Maybe it was Amy? I don't know. Could be that the prophecy is just a bunch of bull? Eh? And that they're just slowly returning back to being fully alive again? This show is a rollercoaster. Hopefully it's not plot holes, just twists and turns.

Also, what was up with the end with those two agents digging up Amy's grave? Could that be the second rising? They had a tank of oxygen in their trunk.. what was that about? I really hope Amy comes back to life, like I sobbed the entire ending of the show and for awhile afterwards. Amy is my favorite.

The writer says, in this interview: http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/in-the-flesh/30824/dominic-mitchell-interview-whats-next-for-in-the-flesh

Interviewer: So you’re saying categorically that Amy was the First Risen?

Dom Mitchell: Amy is the First Risen, yes.

reply

The lady running the B&B Maxine stayed at clearly says she saw the rising begin and points out a photo as the first riser.
In the last episode Maxines take a photo off the wall from the second row (Amy) and you can still clearly see Kieran circled photo still in place in the top row.
It was only Simon who thought Kieran was still the first riser after this point.
Either Amy becoming alive again or not being killed at exactly 12 o'clock prevented the second rising.

reply

I noticed that too when rewatching the second episode.
I guess it could be explained away by saying he didn't remember it correctly but really I think it's just a retcon.
Funny. You'd think they would have remembered shooting a scene with Kieran in full zombie make-up emerging from his grave.
