No Cell Phones - Is This Taking Place In Some Alternate Universe?

Did anyone notice there were ZERO cell/mobile phones anywhere in this series? Does this maybe take place in some alternate universe where they were never invented? Or maybe the cell reception in Roarden sucks and no one uses them?

reply

Reception in the country sucks. Or it could have something to do with the uprising.

Have you considered that cell phones or mobile phones could be the cause of the rising. I mean right now we still don't know what adverse effects the signals are doing to our brains. Perhaps the second rising if it happens and I doubt it will or at least to the degree of the first
Time could be due to cell phone towers turned back on. That's my theory anyhow.

BUT answer me this

1. why was the older rotter taking care if the child rotter

2. Why doesn't people get affected by bites, makes no sense how did they turn others.

1. Rotters hunt in packs. Plus it was probably meant to show that there is still some human left in them, and therefore killing them in cold-blood, when they don't pose an immediate threat to you, is wrong.

2. In episode three, Kieran says that only the people that died the year before the uprising came back as zombies, and that the transmission through biting wasn't fact in this universe.

reply

ahh so the mobile phone radiation could be a factor then

The writing also had nifty little speeches by Lisa's parents about how bites turning people into zombies - "that's how it is in all the films." Nice little moment of dark comedy to lift the generally depressive mood and tone of the series.

I was honestly really pleased with this monologue scene and how it acknowledged previous Zombie lore in society. I feel like I see so many zombie films in which there doesn't seem to be any existence of previous zombie lore in society.

Good question. I think maybe it was their way of showing that even the cliché of the mindless monster was one-sided in that universe. Just like the biting doesn't turn you.

What we know from the "rabid" state of the PDS sufferers ;) is mostly reconstructed from what we heard from the HVF, and Kieren's flashback. We fill the holes with the usual zombie lore but maybe that's wrong and something they'll explore in season 2. if they meds can rebuild those brain functions they lose in their rabid state, maybe they are not all gone even when they are rabid.

Considering the fact that everyone who died in 2009 did not return as a zombie, I think it is safe to assume that this is indeed an alternate universe.

Hahaha.

If you notice they don't have any broadcast TV either. Everything they watch is something previously recorded on a VHS tape or DVD.

based on the age of the computer Kerian is using i'd say it';s the mid 90's but i don't remember if his stone had a date on it

I'm still hung up on the VHS tapes they use. I swear I'm waiting for some floppy disks to pop out maybe a Nintendo or a tamagotchi. That would be great! Lol
But really where are the cellphones haha

reply

His desktop computer looks SUPER old, as well. The whole show looks like it's in the 90's.

Maybe there are no satellites in this universe. No mobile phones. No satnavs (the people coming from Norfolk at the start of S2 Ep6 were using a road atlas) Yes,they have the internet, but that could be only wired dialup internet rather than a satellite system)

reply

I don't think it is an alternate universe necessarily, it was probably a conscious decision to omit anything that is of the current cultural zeitgeist. There are barely any pop culture references. The absence of smartphones also conveniently makes the story very much secluded to their neck of the woods, so to speak.

I'm thinking that too... (alternate universe nearly) the no cell phones was weird, seeing them using telephone boxes/booths.... then the VHS tapes was odd....... but it was an old woman, so i know the oldies hold onto that stuff a bit more.. yet Kierans dad had a brand new huge flatscreen and blurays... and the old volvo.. fair enough they are well made cars and can see some oldish ones.. but a Nissan Sunny taxi!!?? that was an OLD-OLD Y Reg haha, but then we do see some modern cars too.
looking forward to a third season, loved the finale on Season 2.
