Is it just me, or does his character's accent sound more Irish than US Southern?
Sounded Southern to me. He has a nice voice.

It sounds Irish to me, as well, but that would actually make sense. Many men who were fairly new immigrants to the US were drafted into the Civil War, some only a few years after arriving. Semple is an Irish name, so his character was likely someone who hadn't live there long, and may not even have been a citizen.
