Question (SPOILER ALERT!)

SPOILER ALERT!

Can anyone explain why Krzystina decides to go back to Poland at the end of the film? I can appreciate that she is one of the unlucky ones who sees no future in staying in FR Germany, but surely if the film is supposed to take place in the late 1970's, she knows from reading the newspapers what a dire situation Poland is in (which ultimately led to the Solidarnosc strikes); even the GDR was a paradise by way of example.

I also thought about this. Maybe it was Lagerfeuer emphasising the dire situation East German refugees faced, living in a politically destructive sphere of influence and being unable to truly escape.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
