Kendrick, possibly miscast? Or maybe perfectly cast?

I watched this movie on DVD at home, my wife was busy in the other room. I have a nicely furnished home theater with premium speakers. About 15 minutes in as Kendrick was singing one of her numbers my wife said, unprompted, "She may be on pitch but she sure has an annoying voice."

And I thought for a second and she was spot on, she really does have a very annoying singing voice, particularly in her primary range. Plus she has the same annoying speaking voice.

Now I don't have a Pb ear, I am a life-long musician and singer, I have played in the pit for musicals, I have been in the cast of one musical, I have paid attention to singing, both good and marginal, for a number of years. There is no question in my mind, while Kendrick may be suitable for ensemble roles where singing is a part of that (i.e. 'Pitch Perfect') she is not suitable for a featured singing role like she has in this musical.

(Some spoilers follow.)

But the primary focus of the story here is two people meet and fall in love, but they are going in opposite directions. His career is on the upswing while she believes she has talent and can never get past the auditions. So maybe it was inspired casting, Kendrick does not sing well enough to carry a featured singing role, and that is exactly the character she plays here. "Pretty good" but not good enough when compared to the really talented.

Anyway that is my take, reinforced by my wife's sage observation.

I think she sounds fine - and she's been in a lot of musicals lately, so apparently most others do not find her voice annoying. She certainly was not cast in Into the Woods because she only had a "pretty good" voice.

I can't understand the praise for her singing, she isn't that good at all compared to the really good stage and film singers.

Well.... she's famous and they're not. This movie didn't make any money even with two stars - so they're not about to cast unknowns. I think she's absolutely charming. I think they both are. I don't know how the movie could work for anyone that didn't think so. I think they're absolutely perfect in their roles. They break my heart.

Have I heard better voices in this role? Sure. But I haven't seen it this well acted. See I'm Smiling was heartbreaking.

In general, I liked Mr. Jordan's performance in the "end of the relationship" songs and Ms. Kendrick's performance in the "beginning of the relationship" songs.

Anna can sing but the tone of her voice really starts to go through you after a while. Lol

i thought she was great in L5Y. and i have been a musical theater performer/singer for most of my life. i also really liked her in into the woods, tho i usually prefer a more legit soprano for cinderella.

Her musical performances in Into The Woods were absolutely gorgeous.

My problem with Anna Kendrick was that she didn't fit the image of a "shiksa goddess," who ideally should be statuesque and blonde.

As long as she keeps the utterly dreadful Amanda Seyfried with her goat bleating from being cast in any more musicals, it's all good.

I belong to the "Not an Anna Kendrick" fan club, although I've liked her in a few things...the first "Pitch Perfect" and "Up in the Air". I've also been in my share of musicals (I even recognized a guy I did a show with in this movie...one of the casting directors when she was auditioning).

I agree with the OP. She sings on key, but her voice is not beautiful. Its very nasal, shrill. Plus, she always looks like she is smelling something bad.

Jeremy Jordan (Jamie) has a beautiful voice, but he is just too young to play Jamie. Plus, his role has been downsized to make Kendrick the star, when they should have been (and WERE on stage) equally important. His song " If I didn't believe in you" was supposed to be the shows eleventh hour number - its truly the best song in the show, yet Kendricks "We Can do Better" (a throw-away number) was showcased. Huge mistake.

I'm not sure who made the decisions about the opening number "I'm Still Hurting". The frozen face, the blank stare (broken only by the occasional tear). A truly beautiful voice could have pulled it off. Kendrick uses vocal gimmicks...she uses her very high, thin chest voice, which she belts with no vibrato most of the time. She has little warmth in her tone, no richness, no softness.

I saw the show staged at LA Jolla in 06 and loved it. The movie is okay...nowhere near as good as the stage show.

Everything you just said about Anna Kendrick was dead on to what I think about her.

How is Jeremy Jordan too young to play Jamie? Jamie is meant to be 23-28 during the course of the movie, and Jordan was right in the middle of that during filming.

reply

He seems too young, despite his actual age.
