The Extended Version's additional "scary scenes" are kinda...nonsensical

So one of them is that Hector and his group go to the church to try and open up that portal. Cool, makes sense. Everything they did in the church could've made sense in the context of the film except that when they're in the church bathroom and they're investigating the stalls and get to the last one, which is locked. As they start to leave, the stall rattles as if someone is beating the hell out of it as they walk away. That right there should have showed the characters that something demonic was in their midst, yet they seem to forget about this scene and are barely fazed by the Simon Says game talking to them, and keep playing around with the book, and joking with the fact that he can fall backwards and be caught, when the church bathroom scene alone should have scared the characters into thinking something evil was in their midst.

Secondly, and this one is much more annoying. The scene where the group's in the basement of Ana's place for the first time. And when I assume to be Grandma Lois or a random witch is walking around upstairs. In the theatrical if I remember correctly, that's all she does, then leaves. In the Extended, Lois actually comes down INTO THE BASEMENT. So the group hides behind ONE sheet of plastic or whatever that is, looking at her silhouette. And Lois just STARES at the sheet while the group hides behind it, yet somehow no one in production thought it would make sense for them to TURN OFF THE CAMERA'S LIGHT, which completely ruins the scene and would have in any other movie spurred Lois to open up the sheet and completely changed the movie probably since she would see the group in the basement. But no, she just comes down into the basement just to stand there for 15 seconds, then leaves. Completely stupid.

that's probably why they removed those scenes from the theatrical/regular version of the movie. Besides, these movies are full of unrealistic moments like that, so your examples aren't really anything new.

Ugh, the basement scene with light was so annoying; completely absurd. I really believe this installment was just filler to meet a contractual obligation of releasing a movie that year. They clearly put very little effort into this one.

I have a collection on DVD that has the first 5 movies. On parts 2 and 4 and it has the theatrical and unrated versions but for Parts 3 and 5 it has just the theatrical. I'm not sure how they decided that but I wish they'd be more consistent.
