It's better than Paranormal Activity 4...

...that's as far as i'll go. Another stain on Paranormal Activity's legacy, it's really sad to watch how this series' great concept gets raped with every single installment.

For me Paranormal Activity is like Final Fantasy, i'll keep buying every installment in the hopes of them being able to recapture the magic from the old days...even though every Paranormal Activity since the first, and every Final Fantasy since IX, has been a tedious toothgrind into the bottom of the barrel :(

The first one was incredibly overrated. The formula that everyone hates in the sequels is what made the first one so "great".

I don't think these movies are that great, but when I read people saying how the first one was the best I wonder what kool-aid they're drinking. It's the exact same stupid formula. The characters in the first film weren't anything special, the acting meh, and it was mostly random boring dialogue with brief scares here and there. Guess what? That's exactly what the sequels did!

I'm gonna have to disagree, big time.

Spoony actually made a vlog pointing out why PA1 was so great, and I agree with everything he says. Basically where the first one relies more on it's atmosphere, the sequels rely almost entirely on jump scares.

I agree with most of what you said. I really liked the first movie, even enjoyed 2 and 3 (despite their flaws). But the 4th one was truly awful and this... well it's not as bad as 4, but not by much. They're just milking this premise as much as they can. If they can't think of an interesting direction to take it, these movies just need to end.

I think they are all entertaining.

Exactly what was so bad about The Marked Ones? I thought it was the best one and it actually didn't use the same formula as the other four.

reply

The formula changed, but the execution is exactly the same which is jarring.

Like 2,3 and 4, this relies WAY too heavily on cheap jump scares. People just don't know how to set an atmosphere of dread anymore, that's what Blair Witch Project did.

If you want good horror films go watch The Babadook and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, way better than this s***...

I watched The Babadook yesterday and didn't care for it. I wanted to, had heard nothing but good things about it but it didn't live up to the hype. Mom started off caring and patient, slowly started changing and wound up an impatient, dog hating witch who says mean things to her son. Yawn. I've never heard of the other one you listed so I'll look into it.

I disagree completely. This was the best one since the original, maybe even better. Fantastic effects, great humor, creepy scenes, and likable characters. The Marked Ones was great!

I love the 1st one, it scared me and i enjoy it as a film. The sequel was pretty good, i liked how the stories tied up had a few good scares, the third was ok until the final act, the fourth was awful. This one was alright actually- not a patch on the original or 2nd but imo better than 3 and 4.

I liked this last one, and thought Landon did an excellent job tying it into the lore. Taken from a different vantage point from the others it connects the story well with the possible theory that it isn't just the single home that is tied into the paranormal attack.

reply

I wouldn't go that far.

It is slightly better than "Paranormal Activity 4," but I gave both 6/10 stars. I think I liked the second installment the best, but I saw that before the first so maybe the concept felt a bit more fresh then. This series ran out of steam pretty quickly, but at least "The Marked Ones" took the concept to a new neighborhood and had a few moments of inspired weirdness.

To me there's little to recapture. These movies are mildly entertaining but I never foudn them scary. This one is the worst, but I don't think any of them are very good.
