Made me dislike James Brown

He seemed to have that disorder, that causes people to not be able to connect to others because of abandonment issues.

He was a woman beater. He was selfish. And the way he treated Bobby Byrd was abysmal, especially when Bobby sat there, just talking about his dreams and JB tried to crush them, accusing Bobby (who had been nothing but supportive) of subversion, trying overshadowing him. Not once did JB acknowledge Bobby and how he wouldn't be where he was without being rescued by Bobby and his family. Instead, he takes a shot at Bobby and implies he could have screwed his wife.

As for the racism of the time, I'm glad the movie chose not to focus on it except to point out specific incidents in JB's life that impacted him mentally, such as the boxing event and child exploitation. We all know how racist the era was, and it is time we focus on our people and not some crappy racist people from yesteryear, giving them more importance and weight than they deserve in our lives and in our history.

The movie was produced by Mick Jagger, who also produced the documentary that aired on HBO about JB's life. For me, the documentary was more informative by far, than this biopic and also focused on the racism and JB's role in the civil rights movement. The documentary was inspirational. JB did not come across as unlikeable in the documentary, but very direct and strong willed. In the movie, he comes across as a person who uses his personality to dominate others.

Good points. He was not a role model, he had plenty of faults, but he pioneered rock and roll, so his story needs to be told.

Unfortunately, that's what happens when an artist of his caliber....starts believing his own hype, and does not work on retaining some element of humility. He did not achieve that success all by himself.....and someone needed to remind him of that.

Read comments and stories from friends, family, and associates of the illustrious Frank Sinatra. He was a very giving and compassionate person. But as a great entertainer and highly visible, and much-worshipped, world renown icon; be could be a complete A$$ in the blink of an eye...because no one bothered to check him on his arrogant behavior!

And I never heard anything about that, even after watching his two part documentary.

I respect the film for showing the good and bad vs some fictional wholesome character like straight outta compton. I feel that's why soc was received so well; it painted the guys as angels vs this film which showed how much of a jerk most of these legendary artists are.

I'm sure he was capable of being both inspiring AND unlikable, depending on the event and the period of his life. You've got both sides of him, it's just that unfortunately, they aren't together!



Having said all that, that was kind of my impression of him while he was still alive. a super talented genius who was a selfish sob.
I mean i always liked him but I always had the impression he was extremely difficult.
