*SPOILERS* Alternate ending was much better than the theatrical!

In the theatrical ending, they couldn't defeat Toby at all and ended up as Hunter's family did, but in the alternative ending, they finally success defeating Toby and they move into a new house. Yeah alternate ending seems to be a happy ending but I can't talk more because it is a huge spoiler. Actually, the alternate ending is not a happy ending, but it is an open ending. In my opinion, it was much better than the theatrical version!

How did you see the alternate ending? If that's true, I think I would like that better too. I would prefer an open end than the usual "Tobi wins" ending.

Thanks for that. I guess I'll have to shell out the bucks for the VOD to scope it out. We (my girlfriend and I) were quite disappointed with how the series ended, as we've been following it every year since the first came out.

The alternate ending sounds much more fitting.

Edit: Just watched it. Yeah, I liked that ending more. That final shot opens the doors up for more movies... Hmm.

So what was the freakin alternate ending?! You can't just mention it and not tell us what it is? I wasted enough time and money on the theatrical release.. Please save me the time and loot and just fill me in. I say this as a devoted fan but am not willing to give another penny to this franchise after the last outing.

They defeat Toby but the wife is preggo with a new child and for some unknown reason that cult leader is there and picks the little girl up and hugs her.

It makes no sense because they saw him in the videos the whole movie and yet don't seem aware that it's the same guy even though they know he's bad.

Not a good ending, really dumb. It's just as bad as Tony winning but in a different way.

You left out the scene before that where the young versions of Katie and Kristi show up after they've moved. Clearly the implication is that they somehow indoctrinated them into the cult.

reply

Yeah. I didn't get that either. After watching it again the only thing I can figure is that we are seeing two different alternate endings. The first is them moving to a completely different house where the tape falls on the ground and the girls show up; the second alternate ending was them having stayed in the house with Emily having gotten pregnant and the ponytail dude showing up at Leila's birthday. I just don't see how they could work together.

reply

yeah, the alternate ending was better, but it commits them to another movie so that we don't end with a total wtf.

reply

Right. The filmmakers clearly said they are done with this arc though. So theatrically nothing really got accomplished except more BAD things.

If they were smart the movie would have just ended when Toby disappeared and they moved out... done. At least that would have been sort of satisfying. More bad things is what people have expected so why do what people expect at this stage? I just don't get it.

I really think that after PA 1 the films got more stupid in writing and they couldn't find a way out. They just wanted to cash checks.

The first film was the only one that honestly felt original. I also think that the original film had a passion the others lacked. The cheapest film of the bunch was still the best.

The ending made NO sense, why didn't they recognize ponytail when he picked up Leila, why was he allowed at the party, HOW did ponytail, Katie and Kristi end up there? but there were some things I did like, Emily's pregnancy which seemed to foreshadow that it wasn't over, and Katie and Kristi holding hands with Leila, and Leila was so adorable! Is it just me or does she look like Kristi a little? it'd make sense since Leila was befriended by Toby in the same manner as Kristi was, so they probably wanted some resemblance.

It was nice seeing everything back to normal though, after Katie killed her family, the Nelsons, after all the pain and havoc Toby caused on the World, the tapes were smashed, the cycle was put to a complete end, but I still prefer the original ending because of, well, everything. It still made more sense than this ending.

But I kinda want to know what was in the tape that Ryan smashed, you could see the writing on it.

K K and Leila bedroom

K K and Leila bedroom

My own personal interpretation of the tape and its contents being smashed is that it symbolizes what happened in the original ending -- they're literally smashing it to pieces and presenting us with a new ending. (Katie and Kristi and Leila in the bedroom is basically what happened in the original ending.)

As for this alternate ending, it's completely anticlimactic. Okay, first of all, by somehow smashing that tape, it causes those two girls to appear. At this point, did we time travel or is this the "present" day? Then it abruptly cuts to Leila's birthday party, and Emily is already pregnant. Leila "wishes" for a brother. So who is this going to be? Is this Toby? Are we still in the present? Is the baby somehow going to get born on the same date? What is the significance of any of this?

And okay, ponytail. I had to read up on this to realize that it's supposed to be the same guy from the beginning of the movie. This wasn't apparent to me at all. This just felt like a terrible movie with a terrible ending, but I probably prefer the original ending because it seemed more in line with the other ones. Neither is a fitting conclusion to this completely bloated series and all claims that this would tie everything up were bogus and unsubstantiated...of course.

I completely agree, it made no sense at all.
But some of the major points to evaluate.

Katie and Kristi are in 2013 holding hands with Leila who was supposed to help them bring Toby to the world, but now that Toby has been banished to Hell, the prophecy has been averted and he can't return? But how is ponytail there and why would he be so endearing with Leila, shouldn't he be vengeful and want to kill the family himself?

Actually, I'm not so sure it's related to the original ending, it sounds like a picture I've seen before that shows Leila in bed while Katie and Kristi are watching her, I think it was actually another doorway that would bring Toby back into their lives somehow and if they put the tape into the VCR, the 'portal' would be reopened.

Perhaps Emily's pregnancy is the next marked one? but Toby is in Hell so he can't do anything to him/her so... yeah.

To be honest I enjoyed the original ending and if you go to the thread titled

'Is this the last Paranormal Activity Movie?' where I explain the 'plot holes' and confusion of it all, but I warn you, it may hurt your head as it can become quite paradoxical.

I just watched it today online and I got the alternate ending which I actually like but have some questions that need answers which require another movie (is that so bad? We need to deal with Hunter, Jesse, Lois, Katie and the rest of the coven once and for all!). I noticed that Ryan was completely oblivious to the coven leader at his daughters birthday party even though he's seen the tapes and reacted harshly to the video. What I think is that Ryan and Emily didn't recognize him due to aging (I guess, but then again the dude picked up and hugged their daughter like he knew her) and Mike just was plain oblivious (he was holding the camera). Ryan and Emily didn't see Kati and Kristi but Mike did because he was holding the camera and I think Emily's baby might be just a baby or there might be more going on there.

I honestly don't agree that another movie should be made to give us 'closure' when we've already got 'closure' and especially about things that are irrelevant to the storyline.

I love Katie and was disappointed that she didn't reappear as the star of the franchise but she served her role as Toby's vessel to obtain Hunter and posing as the real estate to sell Emily and Ryan the house that was built over her childhood home, she was of no more use to Toby after that, Hunter and Jessie are Toby's minions that will likely help him bring chaos upon the World along with the rest of his demonic army of males and pregnant females , Lois and the Coven have succeeded in their quest to bring Toby into the World, now it's up to him. And I'm sure other Demons around the World are also being brought to life like Toby was, the final agenda once they all meet could possibly be Judgement Day.

Yeah, the alternate ending didn't make sense at all, Ponytail would of tried to kill the family after they banished Toby back to Hell, foiling his plans, unless he knows that Emily's baby is the next chosen and will give the Coven another chance? Possible but I 100% prefer the original ending. And it's weird how they freaked out over the reappearance of Katie and Kristi holding hands with Leila, but not the man who was responsible for bringing Toby to the family in the first place, then again it was Leila's birthday so they must've blocked the memories out?
