The MacGuffin

I loved this film. I only watched it because it was on at a convenient time and it had Valeria Golino in it - but it completely sucked me in and I sat virtually unmoving until the end of the credits.
There is a deeper meaning and social commentary in this film and if so inclined these could be earnestly discussed and much pseudointellectual satisfaction derived. But frankly I don't care. The cast was so good and structure of the film so well crafted that I think any event, or MacGuffin as Hitchcock would probably have said, that got the story started would have served as well as the fate of the waiter.
