This beat THE GREAT BEAUTY? Italian Oscars can be just as puzzling

First of all. I did like HUMAN CAPITAL. Quite good and it builds up to a nice intersection of the three stories.

But, this "Italian CRASH" beating the gorgeous stunning THE GREAT BEAUTY for Italy's Donatello for Best Picture? Wow, just goes to show you that the Italian Academy members can be just as ordinary as the much berated American Academy voters.

THE GREAT BEAUTY not only won the Best Foreign Film award, but it was Best Picture at the European Film Awards and won tons of acclaim across the world. It simply is a great great film. HUMAN CAPITAL is a good one.

In general I'd agree. "Human Capital" has the superior ensemble cast and is very, very good, but "The Great Beauty" just seems to be on a different level.'

The buzz was that Italian critics weren't as taken with "The Great Beauty" as the international community in general and Human Capital's David di Donatello Best Film victory suggests likewise.

To a certain extent, but GREAT BEAUTY did win a lot of tech awards as well as Best Director and Best Actor, so it wasn't like how CITIZEN KANE got crushed by HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (also a superb film by the way) winning only one award.

What is a good film or a great one is all a matter of opinion. Who gives a toss about film awards in the first place. The only valid awards I know of are the Empire Magazine awards which are voted for by the general public. I saw both films, I thought this film was better and whether it won awards or not is neither here nor there.

gorgeous & stunning? Yes, The Great Beauty was that. That doesn't mean it was a better work overall though. TGB's story was a mess.

THE GREAT BEAUTY: 7/10
HUMAN CAPITAL: 8/10
