Apparently, single moms are all rich...

Only Tyler Perry would write such tripe. Single moms, who happen to be executives, living in lavish houses with children that go to what appears to be a private school. And the trailer consistently shows the presence of men in these women's lives. The struggle of being a single mom is primarily that you a SINGLE PERSON trying to afford the cost of rasing kids. Yet these women seem to be financially comfortable enough to sit around drinking wine on the porch in the middle of the day, talking about men.

Ridiculous. It looks more like the Alimony Whores Club.

And I recognize the trailer does depict one of these moms to be blue collar and unaffluent. Yet her kids go to the same school as the rich families? It doesn't make any sense.

Watch the film first, then criticize!

reply

You make a fair point- obviously I haven't seen the film, so my critic was based off of the trailer. That being said, is there some unwritten rule that I am not allowed to critize a film based off its trailer?

Would you have taken issue if I had written a positive "this looks soooo great!" post after seeing the trailer? People are allowed their opinions, and critiquing goes both ways- good and bad.

Trailers are explicitly designed to summarize the essence of a film so that audiences can gauge their interest.

And I was very specific- I didn't just say "it looks like crap." I gave pointed examples to express my dissatisfaction. I feel that's a fairer shake than most posts on this site.

Now, upon its release, if it turns out the trailer was completely misleading, I will happily rescind my prior assessment. However, it's been a rare occasion that I've been "pleasantly suprised" by a film.

reply

You're allowed to criticize whatever you want to criticize, it's a free world! I've never seen a Tyler Perry film, and I don't plan to anytime soon, but you can't watch a trailer and start making criticisms about a film. When you see the whole film then and only then can you make a valid argument and assessment.

P.S There's no rule that says single mom's have to be broke, they're many strong independent single mom's out there who have made a great living for themselves.

reply

Agree there are no rule that say single mom's need to be broke, but when you market it with a storyline like this
"When five struggling single moms put aside their differences to form a support group, they find inspiration and laughter in their new sisterhood, and help each other overcome the obstacles that stand in their way."
then they better be *beep* struggling!
Having high paid jobs, sending kids to private schools and bitching about how there are no good men out there doesn't qualify as struggling in any society on this planet!
Ofc you can criticize a movie based on a trailer, I've seen plenty of *beep* trailers that convinced me that this rubbish is not worth to see. I've even dissed movie just based on their title, in fact three just in the last few months: Hercules: the legend begins, Son of God and Noah. Three movies I wouldn't piss on if all the copies were on fire!

reply

then they better be *beep* struggling!

I agree. it's one thing to be a low income single mother and a hard working middle class woman who can afford a good daycare or good school for her children. Being a single mom is HARD!!!! but it's harder when you live on a tight income and have no one else to turn to to help with raising your child.

reply

You have a narrow and limited view of "struggling." Apparently you see it only as a financial issue, with no consideration for there being other ways in which a single parent could be struggling.

OK, I threw some crumbs out there and you can follow them and expand your worldview or stay stuck in that dark hole. Remember, free your mind and your ass will follow. Good luck.

reply

Yea poor rich people, they have problems just like the rest of us...give me a break.

Now, a question of etiquette - as I pass, do I give you the ass, or the crotch?

Yeah. God forbid they provide a accurate portrayal of single moms. Reminds me of something I was watching recently that sums up the hollywood/media BS: https://youtu.be/z6fDHXoGL_k?t=3316

you dont need to see a tyler perry movie to understand that it is tripe. Hes such a joke.

People always try to poke holes in ur arguement with semantics, never with actual content of the movie. They know its bad, but they dont want to admit it so they try to attack your basis of criticism rather than what you are actually criticizing

tyler perry is a hack. Sure hes rich, and very successful. But he was just the lucky/smart guy that jumped on the exploiting black people train and has been riding it ever since lmao.

I dunno how much he actually exploits black people, but his movies are always black casted and are always making them look like crazy psychos.

Whatever makes him money i guess! thats what hes thinkin, believe me, he doesnt care about black issues or anything lol. Hes just makin money and knows black people like an all-black cast so therefore there will always be a market for his garbage. At least until someone with any kind of filming talent comes and replaces him with quality work with all-black casts.

reply

And again, we have someone attacking and criticizing a movie that hasn't come yet and most likely won't see. Your post is ridiculous and pathetic.

Internet Trolls don't get a rise out of people, only sympathy.

reply

The critique isn't fair, also, because other crappy writers besides Tyler Perry write similar tripe.

reply

Nothing wrong with the OP's observations to me.
This movie looks like $hite.

reply

Couldn't agree more. Dx

"If you don't have anything nice to say...come sit by me!"

reply

Cmjenn, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Wow, your original post is so ignorant and just plain ridiculous it's almost laughable. I watched the trailer and I don't think it showed everyone woman's house so I don't understand where you gathered they're all living in lavish houses. Consistently show men? Ok, so single parents can't have interests in someone? Go on dates? "these women seem to be financially comfortable enough to sit around drinking wine on the porch in the middle of the day, talking about men." This is the most ridiculous comment you made. Are you seriously saying that single moms can't have friends and hang out drinking wine? Single moms can't afford wine? Can't afford to send their kids to private school? Some can, some can't. Some work more than one job to do so, some struggle to do so, some don't. You should get out more and socialize, maybe then you'll see that what you said earlier is just plain clueless.

reply

You know what this trailer reminds me of? 2008's The Women. Which was easily one of the worst 2 hours of my life! Sure there are people out there like this, but how many people in the world can actually relate to their life style and their problems? 5%, maybe...

reply

I understand your comment about "The struggle of being a single mom is primarily that you a SINGLE PERSON trying to afford the cost of raising kids." but there are all kinds of single mothers and some are financially comfortable, have their kids in good schools and have the presence of men in their lives whether they are involved in a new relationship or the father is involved. This doesn't take away the struggle or maybe a better way of stating is the "finesse" of trying to run a houselhold independently. I'm a single mom and I went to college, I have a masters and a good job. That doesn't take away from having to pull it all together as a single mom. I have been very fortunate and grateful to have support from family and involvement of the dad. I think its great that Tyler Perry came out with a movie that shows a different perspective of the single mom. The stereotype is that of young, uneducated and low income women which is sometimes the case but certainly not always. Women who are coming up on their own (even with the support of family and friends) and this is something that should be celebrated. And of course we need to celebrate the men that support us as well!

you are 100% right!

One of them is a waitress in a diner. These woman arent all rich.

Good points. Will be interesting to see. This wouldn't be the first time that Hollywood made a movie that had ZERO CLUE what surviving in this world is all about with barely there wages and zero discretionary income. How could they? Why would they? They live in fantasy land.

Pisses me off watching Ellen (and I love Ellen) have on guests that have sob stories and she gives them a bunch of money or a car and then they show their homes and their homes are BEAUTIFUL UPPER-MIDDLE CLASS to LOWER UPPER-CLASS homes. Makes me think they didn't do their homework before pouring riches on them.... they just read an e-mail and said... this one....!!!

I'm a single father... with a barely there salary with 47% of my check missing before I even see it.... I know.

Strongly agree. I haven't seen the movie yet, but someone here mentioned that one of the single mothers is a waitress. I've been going to the movies on my own since the 80's, and I can think of many examples where a minimum-wage earner had an apartment in New York/Los Angeles that would cost 10x their pay in rent, and yet they could afford nice wine and fancy furnishings.
