Good movie

I liked the way the story stayed very realistic.and true to life without really using your standard rom-com formula, although I would question whether Johanna made a good choice, because even though they got married and had a baby, when Ken inevitably relapses her situation will be infinitely harder.

I also think that one downside of the realism of it all was that Johanna just sort of settled for who she could get...In a way I find that sad because it really shows how and why all these sweet, quiet and kind women end up with losers and flush their lives down the toilet trying to save someone who in a lot of cases don't want to save themselves.

But then again you can see that Johanna just wanted something of her own after all those years of helping that old lady, so maybe when she said "I have what I want," she meant it. Even so I really hope they don't do a sequel where Ken ODs and Johanna and her son are homeless because they lost the motel due to a loan he never told her about or something.

I agree that Johanna 'settled' somewhat. She hadn't really had much experience (if any) with men. It's probable that she never dated because she was working since the age of 15 and even stated that she rarely got out. So when Ken casually invited her to come to the restaurant with him and his daughter on her first day in town she felt good about him. Everything she subsequently does to be with Ken makes sense in her small world.

I don't agree that Ken was a 'loser' though. He was an addict with problems. He was kind to Johanna and appreciated her looking after his daughter.

She definitely meant it. She wants a family of her own and someone to love who loves her--essentially what most people want. She just decides to choose the person most available to her. You could say both she and Ken settled, but it's not like they had a lot of choices. Hopefully Ken will stay on track and things will work out. The point is that two lonely damaged people found each other and tried to make their lives better.

I just can't see how she could have done what she did for any reason other than being in love.
