I thought for half the movie this was Lou's grandmother. So she says to Louisa did you have any other grandchildren?

huh?

So was Lou's father this old woman's grandson? who was Louisa's child?

It makes me cringe to watch a movie and not know for sure who is who.
was Lou's dad a grandchild or was it Amanda?

'Lou's' Dad was Louisa's grandson, J.C. Cardinal, son of her son, Jacob, whose wife Susan left when John Jacob was young because she 'couldn't stand life on the mountain'...So, that makes young Lou her great granddaughter..

Just watched the movie. Pretty good. Like you, I got so freaking confused at who is who as far as the age differences as well. They just looked like grandmother, daughter and her daughter. I didn’t see another generation there at all. Not to mention the confusion in names. Not sure if that was intentional but it really threw me off. Even when apparently the great grandmother explained it , couldn’t follow it. !!
