Question about what Effy says to her mom's bf

What is she going to tell her mom about? The mom knew the bf had gone to the club that night. So that's not news. I thought for a moment she was going to tell her mom that the bf had done something inappropriate with her, but that wasn't it. What was she referring to?

FYI: Look at the earlier thread "Age of Consent in Denmark is 15." There is a lot of discussion about this topic there.

I explained in the "great romance" thread but I'll elaborate here.

The mother's boyfriend WAS doing something inappropriate with Effy, it is intimated in several scenes but never stated outright. The way the mother's boyfriend acted with her at the nightclub was a dead giveaway but also he calls her all morning when he realizes she is with another guy. In the scene where she tells him she's going to tell her mom he said something about "taking her out if she wants" implying that they normally do things together indoors.

With all of that you have to conclude that he was molesting her or at least in the 4th stage of the grooming process:

I imagine the director thought it would be too dark and may turn some viewers off to make that aspect of the film overtly evident however all the clues were left in place for the astute viewer to decode. Understanding of this gives the film another level altogether, on the surface it may appear that Effy saved William but in fact he saves her just as much if not more so by breaking the grooming process that had warped her understanding of love.

Interesting. Could you understand what they were saying at the nightclub scene? I think the subtitles went silent for that stretch. I get distracted to other stuff when that happens because usually it means the dialogue isn't important enough to subtitle.

You have no proof.

The way the mother's boyfriend acted with her at the nightclub was a dead giveaway

What was a giveaway? There was nothing to imply anything sexual in that scene at all.

but also he calls her all morning when he realizes she is with another guy.

Exactly like someone who cared would do.

Exactly like someone who cared would confront her at the club the night before.

In the scene where she tells him she's going to tell her mom he said something about "taking her out if she wants" implying that they normally do things together indoors.

Wrong, this was NEVER said in the movie. Effy's step dad said "If you want to go out, just ask". He never said anything about taking her out...at all. And I have no clue how on earth you could think that implys "they do stuff indoors". That is a complete stretch.

There was definitely something going on with her and the mom's bf. All the signs point to it as stated above. You can choose to ignore them but it's pretty clear.

The thing is, if you read between the lines, the inappropriate behavior with the mom's bf is consensual. Earlier in the film she said something along the lines of "I don't like teenage boys," and then later, she stuck around to hear what the bf was telling her mom before she left. She was listening not for her mom's concern, but her own.

And like they said above, the club scene was a dead giveaway. The way they were fighting, their body language. It was as if they were a couple. He was acting like a jealous bf.

Movies like this aren't going to hold your hand and take you through everything. They leave it up to you to figure things out. And her being in a relationship with an older man previously is very important to the film. Look to the scenes at the end where she almost completely transforms to a middle school student/young daughter from the college kid she was perceived as throughout the whole film. Also when William didn't take advantage of her when she was so willingly ready to give herself to him.

I've read about a dozen critic reviews and seen/listened to several interviews with Mark Raso.

With the exception of one review that flirted with the suggestion of interpretation, not one other review mentioned anything about the topic, nor has Raso himself ever mentioned it or been asked about it in any interview, anywhere. Or any actor from the film for that matter.

How would such an important piece never be brought up? Arguably the second most important component to the film, if true. It doesn't hold water.

Provide some actual substance where anyone involved with the movie confronts the topic.

then why do you think she said "i'm telling Mom" ?

Because the step Dad was out at a nightclub cheating.

In the scene where we see the step Dad come home and have a confrontation with Effy's mom (while Effy snuck in the house to get her passport), Effy's mom accuses the step Dad of being with a woman named "Heidi", and was berating him for an answer of who else was there.

Because Effy's Mom knew another woman's name, we are left with the impression Effy's mom knows he has been unloyal before. And we know he was out at a nightclub, which Effy could verify what he was actually doing at that nightclub.

It's never consensual with a child!

You are correct, it never is according to law. But in the child's mind, it is.

reply

The child's mind doesn't matter in that situation, it is the adult's responsibility to set her straight and enforce a platonic relationship.

Mom's bf was coming on to her. And she knew it wasn't right and told him she was going to tell her mother.

I think because William stopped anything physcial from happening between them in the hotel, it made her more confident and reassured of herself and she could say this to mom's bf without hesitation. Maybe she couldn't say it before. It looks like the bf's attraction to her and trying to control her have been going on for a while and when he saw she may have a bf, he wanted to replace him. If something did happen between mom's bf and Effy at 14, it would have forever changed her life, future and relationship with guys. So, Effy and William's brief encounter had a positive effect on one another for different reasons and was the turning point in their lives. It might give them a better handle on life - William with people in general and dealing with his father, and Effy, with guys. Both are better people because of these two days together, not to mention both will remember this as being one of the best experiences in their lives.
