Songbird/Screaming Mimi (Thunderbolts vs Masters of Evil)

From what I understand, the shift between Thunderbolts and Masters of Evil is supposed to be an illusion, a cosmetic hologram of sorts.

In that case, why did Screaming Mimi's powers start doing things Screaming Mimi couldn't do, such as turning into physical bands of sonic energy, or becoming more directed and focused? It seemed she could only do this as Songbird, whereas Screaming Mimi just had more of a Black Canary type of power. But if the change was supposed to be cosmetic-only, then how did her powers change, too?

I think Zemo gave them extra abilities; sorta like Skeletor in "He-Man!" His minions weren't as powerful if not in the crew working for him on Snake Mountain! ;-/

It's a weird case of honoring the comics even though part of it doesn't make as much sense.

In this show, the changes are all supposed to be just a hologram. Yet Songbird still got her new powers. Nothing more said.

As to how it worked in the source?....

In the original story they were emulating, she had burnt out her original powers before Zemo found her. Fixer did some "fix it surgery" with some of technology stolen from Klaw to give her the Songbird powers. Years later she had a portion of her old powers restored too.

The appearance changes in the comics was also handled by Fixer, not a device stolen from Iron Man. Atlas basically got plastic surgery for his new face, while Fixer could change back to his old face at will. Songbird only had a few touchups but her face as is was always obscured by her heavy makeup, so she didn't need much. Moonstone and MACH of course were used to being masked.
