I remember the 1990s Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk and the second season of the Fantastic Four to be pretty good. The only lame 1990s Marvel cartoons were Silver Surfer and Avengers.

People actually liked Silver Surfer. I don't see what was wrong with it. Pretentious perhaps. Doesn't mean bad. It's certainly better than the first season of Iron Man and Hulk's second.

I mean, he's not your average superhero, the guy is silver and flies through space on a surf board so people should know what to expect to some degree.
Still, there was a tragedy in his origin and the life he was condemned to live that made him a very interesting and noble figure.
I don't think it was pretentious, it was just a little more intelligent than a lot of the other comic cartoons at the time with scripts that essentially read 'punch bads guy, save girlfriend'.
