Persona-lite: Personally I thought Stewart ruined the film

Binoche as usual was a joy to behold.

I loved both actresses and the movie. It is a shame that they did not get nominations for SAG, GG, or Oscars. It is especially shameful that Binoche did not get the critic award recognition that Kristen got.

Agree with you regarding Binoche.

I had a little trouble accepting Stewart as a fairy tale Snow White, because she strikes me as contemporary and modern--but that made her a good fit for the American personal assistant, Valentine.

I thought that Kristen was terrific. The movie could not have succeeded without her.

Nature and Nature's laws lay hid in night. God said, "Let Newton be!" and all was light.

Agree. I'm a Binoche fan but to be honest I wanted to see Chloe Moretz in it and those were the two factors that caused me to watch it.

I suppose I'm guilty of not liking the actress because her character was not nice, but that's the way it was for me and Maria. Didn't like her. But Stewart's performance was both eye-opening and- as you said- film saving for me. I loved her performance and by the same vice versa token, I really related to her character too so maybe this made me like her performance more?

I thought, though, that she displayed a lot of contained intensity and that this was the way that character had to be played. She's in the actor's inner life because she's her assistant. This allows her some familiarity with her boss and she can sometimes take liberties and say what's on her mind- even criticizing her. But if she wants to survive in her job, she has to know when to keep her mouth shut.

You can see that there must be something there though, something just beneath the surface- this love/desire or whatever. And this causes her gradually push the envelope and instead of walk a fine line with her employer, she increasingly teeters on the edge and eventually falls off because it becomes too much for her to handle in her position.

I think Kristen pulled this off wonderfully. I found myself able to put myself in her character's shoes very well because of the way she portrayed her (and I'm a bloke, so...).

Her performance in this raised my interest in Stewart a great deal and made me a believer that she was capable of a lot more than she gets credit for.
